Various officials are busy learning lessons from the fire storms that hit the Interior last summer. But the public has to learn a lesson as well: Don't pass off your old junk onto overloaded relief agencies and think you are contributing in any way, because you're not. There was a self-satisfied air to some media coverage of the overwhelming show of public support for fire victims. And in terms of dollar support, there was a lot to be proud of -- something over $8 million was donated.
