LONDON, ON - A grim new twist was put on an old warning to teens when "walking dead" students hit the halls in five Oxford County high schools yesterday. About 20 students in each school symbolically "died" in a crash from drinking or doing drugs and driving. Every 20 minutes, screeching tires and a crash blared over the PA system.
An OPP officer, Oxford paramedic, firefighter and teacher -- playing the grim reaper -- went into a classroom, tapped a student volunteer on the shoulder, put crime scene tape on their desk and walked them out of the room. Those "dead" students wore black T-shirts for the day that read: "Hi, I'm sorry I'm unable to speak to you . . . ever again. I became a statistic today like they said I would."
Their "deaths" were symbolic of the teens who die every Victoria Day weekend, police said.

What an amazing simulation. Very real, the emotions would be running high by the end of the day, I'm sure. I'm going to save this for LittleWannabe. Very powerful.

And no doubt the next presser will say that grief counselling will be available to students affected by the stress of it all.
Its a great and powerful message. My wife and I use real world things to explain to our kids about the dangers of all of the above and bad choices in general.
She still uses the old standy put that down or youll lose an eye!

Good program!! I like blunt stuff like that! We also teach our kids at home real world lessons! My oldest is 15, I have been on the dept for about the same amount of time. Our 3 kids have heard real life lessons come across the pager for 15 years now, they remember!! The kids at our school had a guest speaker a couple of weeks ago, he lost his daughter to a drunk driver years ago, and the 1 month later lost his son in an MVA...no seatbelt! Not a dry eye in the school by the time he was done! very good presentation for anyone!
