I'm doing it tomorrow morning. I went to visit one of the halls today after work and wow what a great bunch of guys. Talked with them for a good half an hour and showed me around and stuff. Seems like a really good department to get hired but from the sounds of it they are not really that busy :(

June 3rd for me brother... can't wait! I was getting really nervous wondering why I seemed to be having a hard time with my stair workouts... then I realized, I am doing them for 5.5 minutes instead of the 3.5 I used to do...and I found my missing 10 lb plate... hahaha... it was in the bag, so I've been doing 85 lbs instead of 75!!! Phew! I'm not in the same shape I was the last time (I'm carrying my own extra ten pounds as well), but I'm still strong, so I'm casually optimistic (but I'll keep my fingers crossed anyway)!
I hope all goes well DH, just listen to the proctor and whip through it... don't worry about what can go wrong... just do what I do... I pretend it's life or death each time... hahaha... no pressure there! lol!
Best of luck to all!
Sue :)

Just got back from the test. That is a breeze compared to York. Once I got to the body drag my legs were definetly feeling it but it was more fun then anything. I got picked to go first which a year ago would have been death to me but it was awesome. The platoon chief was watching the whole time which gave me some added motivation. I have a interview next Thursday. The lady said it would take an hour and a half. They had water and gatorade for the participants which I think is a nice gesture considering at York you barely get a hello. All the captains and firefighters helping out were great and sincerely want you to do good.
A great experience!!

Thanks guys, im pretty pumped. I went and visited my station in Toronto today and spent like an hour and a half there. They asked me the question where would I rather work? Not like im probaly gonna get tons of offers but my answer, whoever hires me first. I don't have a preference at all, each department has their own advantages and disadvantages but to all the people doing the markham recruitment why would you want to work in Markham over a big city?

Just got back from my Markam CPAT, I did OK and passed. I have an interview on June 13, so now I have to start getting ready for that! For anyone yet to do their CPAT they say to plan for 1.5 - 2 hours for the first interview. Half an hour for the interview and the rest to write the PreView psych test (hope I'm not crazy!)

Toughest event I feel was the body drag. It's one of the last ones and my legs were really really feeling it by that point. Originally I thought it would be the forcible entry because at the orientation it took my like 7 hits to finish that event. But when I did the test I just focused on using my body and hitting the target dead in the middle and I smoked it in 4 hits.

Hey all,
I have also passed the cpat and have an interview. I had recieved an email today from recruit fire magazine regarding the interview stage. They said about 500 to 600 are invited to the interview!! Anyone else think that is a bit high?
I was under the impression that only 500 - 600 were invited to the CPAT. Based on the pass rate according to one of the testers I talked to today, it is about 70% for men and 30% for women.
Im thinking maybe its around 300 for the interview. Of the 8 people in my group today I know of 2 who failed. I didnt see fail numbers like that at York
I'm guessing that the psych test is really going to narrow the field down
Any othe thoughts on this?????
PeTeRpArKeR
06-07-2005, 03:14 PM
I had the same thoughts myself... But having been new to the process.... who knows... 500-600 seems an awful lot for interviews..... Anyone else with far more experience than me want to weigh in ??

06-07-2005, 04:24 PM
Hello everyone,
I did the CPAT on Monday. My proctor said that 506 registered for the CPAT, so its 506 or less some may not show. I don't know the pass rate but people did fail, some who probably should have passed... but bad things can happen to good people. As for the pre-vue it is more for a personallity test than a psych test. You know some people are meant to sit behind a desk, that is the perpose of this test to find things like that out. It is not unlike a myers-briggs style test, or perhaps a true colors type test. There is not a right or wrong answer, but be careful they can see inconsistanies in your answers so be honest. Of course dishonesty is not a disirable characteristic for a fire fighter.
Just some thoughts,
Take it easy all, and good luck.

I think that failure rate seems awfully high. The last time I did the CPAT in Ottawa, there were two other women in my group and even though one of them suffered, we all passed... although, 2 men in my group on Friday were not successful. It sounds like 2 here, 2 there... so it would make sense that the pass rate would have to be closer to 80% over all, unless you have whol groups failing!
Oh, and Spidey... I did it in three the last test... lol... but it took me 7 this time...I was swinging it pretty slow this time around which pissed me off, so the last couple of swings sent it flying... lol!

I think the number to do the CPAT was around 560. The way it was explained to me at the orientation was the CPAT has a 70% pass rate for average men. So if they just randomly pull from the population 70% of guys pass but that number goes up when you test a bunch of wantabees like us. Almost all of us train for the physicals and are in better then average shape so the pass rate goes up to 80-90% and that is what Markham was expecting. I would guess about 500 interview and yes that is a huge number even for first interviews.

Good job DH Jr (hee hee.. have to differentiate you two)! Is the PreVue anything like the OSFF test?
Rescue05, you need to make an appointment with an optometrist and get a print out/letter of your results. They let you know after the CPAT, but I have to admit, I only heard part of what she said so I called to verify! lol! Get going on it soon, it's sometimes tough to get an appointment and you have to pay for it, OHIP doesn't cover adults anymore (but it's usually covered through insurance).

I just used my York University Fitness test results. It says at the bottom about your vision and if you passed or not.
The prevue has a section like the OS but its way harder. You can't really prepare for it and it just sort of gauges how well you can think quickly. And do I ever mean quickly. The first 2 sections I didn't finish because my time ran up and trust me I wasn't going slow either.
Also the interview was fairly quick and informal. They don't care about your qualifications at all.
We're supposed to hear back in early July if we are moving on.

Wow guys, I called Markham and talked to Nadine Daily. She told me that I could use a note from my doctor for the vaccinations and eye tests. Note must be on letter head on Rx paper. Your doctor or walk-in clinic will provide that service for 10 bucks (normally), if you can prove it.
I go next Thursday and I am already feelin' it.
Also this test as I understand it is used for many professions not just fire. Perhaps most good fire fighters are not good at word jumbbles and the like. Try researching the test on-line and see what you think. Pre-vue testing originally started in the UK and is noe widely used for most jobs. You know to check suitability.

Well I'm home and I would just like to say.... Uggggg!!
Three questions I can definitely answer about myself;
1 - Does my brain like letters? No
2 - Does my brain like numbers, etc? Yes
3 - Do I turn into a freaking lunatic when faced with the pressure of an interview? Apparently now I do!!! I wish I had been able to illustrate a clear and proper image of myself and not the lackluster performance I gave today. I would hate think that they now think I crumble under pressure. Heck, I even don't mind public speaking anymore, but when it's something very important to me I sometimes get a little nervous... what can I say?
I feel like I bombed, so don't feel bad PeterParker... but sometimes that's not always a bad thing! We'll find out in a few weeks either way!!! :)

yes, I think that's the key, I felt unprepared and I like to be prepared, I'm a regular Boy Scout (except not...)!!! lol! I have done an interview like this for the police department and found it went much better (although that was 4 hours, we got waaay off topic a couple of times)...but I was able to prepare for each question (not the exact question, but we were given general topics they would be covering). I have such a better one for that instance. And when they asked if I had any questions, I wanted to ask if I could start over, but I'm guessing that wouldn't have be possible!!! hahaha!!!
Ah well, if you weren't at least a little uncomfortable then it just didn't mean enough to you, it's just a physiological response to remind you that you want to impress and do well.... ah well, no need worrying, we'll know soon enough, then we can move on to the next stage in this process or the next step to becoming a fire fighter elsewhere!

Hey I just checked Markhams website one more time to ensure I have everything and I noticed this for the INITIAL INTERVIEW! Anyone else see this?? Did they ask for the criminal record check or abstract??
"At the time of your interview, you are to bring with you:
Original (or certified) copies of your qualifications (i.e., diplomas, current certificates, immunization card)
A police security clearance (original) and driver abstract. (Shall be dated within the past calendar year)
NOTE: You are responsible for any costs associated with obtaining these items.
If your interview is successful, you will be invited to proceed to the next levels."
If your interview is unsuccessful, you will be provided appropriate feedback.
If a decision is reached to implement a deferral period (file hold), it will be effective from the date of your interview.

They don't ask for it at your interview. And it didn't say it on the letter of acceptance to the next stage.

Just show up with what they ask for on the sheet and you'll be fine. I had my abstract with me (curiosity while updating my driver's license address a little while ago made me have one printed at the kiosk... lol) and they didn't want to see it.
Best of luck guys... again, relax and you'll do fine!!
Sue :)
PS - DH, be wary what you say about the interview and the test, you can be disqualified for talking about specifics.

I didn't mean to be rude or anything, but a couple of things you've said about the interview question types and test question types could be deamed as inappropriate in their eyes... that's all. I've seen it with other processes where an individual was dismissed for talking about the type of interview... just wanted to give a heads up, that's all! :) Who knows, better safe than sorry!

Well judging from my extensive resume of "relative" courses and experience, but no fire fighting experience, I am going to guess they are weighing the interview and PreVue pretty heavily. Weird... I just tried it too and I wasn't able to get in. I was in there yesterday and there were 3 spots left with 20 more that you were not able to book. They did not have the add button, and if you clicked on it, it said that day is not available for booking.
That is strange... maybe those three spots are filled now. There was a booking date on the "unavilable" slots for the 13th to 15th though, it was July 4th 12:00. Maybe there's another batch of letters going out today and the site will re-open for booking! I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Still havent heard anything but hopefully be the end of this week as the chief who interviewed me said they'll let us know early July.
Theyre having meetings right now so maybe its on who should continue forward because all the people I know who have gotten seconds have interviewed with Nadine so maybe she hasn't got a chance to look over everyones yet.
I don't se though how 70 second interviews will make up 30 being hired immediately and then a list of like 50 or so. For instance Mississauga interviews like 5 for every 1 hire so who knows. Good luck everyone!!

Shitters, I was speaking with Christina last night and did not ask her how many interviews, etc. I'll be there on Friday and afterwards I will ask how big the final pool is!!
She called me last night to remind me of what paperwork to take with me and we talked about the interview for a few minutes. Nice lady. If I can think of a reason to call her before Friday, I'll ask then, but I don't want to bug her... she called last night just before 8, I got the message and called back at 9 thinking I was going to be leaving her a message with my work and cell numbers and she was still there... man, they must be putting in a lot of hours to get through this!
That makes sense onfire, that they will be sending out more letters, makes the numbers they are wanting to hire make more sense as well! Best of luck chaps!!! :)

I was waiting for a letter but I got a call today saying that I made it to the next interview! And of course they called my cell when I was in the car with no pen. I had to pull over and search frantically for some sort of writing utensil. I was so flustered and excited that I didn't ask where the interview was. Can someone help me out? Sue I know you had your interview, hope it went well. Could you tell me if it’s at the same place as the last interviews so I don't have to call them back and ask them such a stupid question? Thanks :) Good luck to all who made it through!

Good job Leslie and OnFire. I haven't had my second interview yet, it's tomorrow (I sooo should be asleep right now), but yes, it is at the same place; 438 John Street the old Thornhill Station!

Good luck everyone!!
When I graduated I said to myself im fine with it taking like 1-5 years to get hired but when you start getting interviews its really depressing.
As much as a interview is awesome experience its kind of a false hope sometimes.
But im still 20 years old so I got lots of time.
I'm rooting for all of you to be part of that 50-100 people who get hired.

Sorry to hear that Ed, but there are other recruitments, keep working at it.
I had my second interview yesterday. The nice thing was, I didn't feel as nervous as the first time, familiar faces helped, but I was still a bag of nerves. I felt like I answered the questions a little better, but time will tell if it was what they were looking for. I was honest and myself and I hope it was enough! :)

To the ones that didn,t.. I also feel your pain. This was my first recruitment and though I know logically there will likely be many more, it is still depressing.. I am also only 20 DH so we likely got a ways to go..
Does anyone know if I can call Markham to get feedback on where (or how many ways) I went wrong??

Hey fellow Markham applicants,
First, I am new here (and to the whole firefighting application process in general) and have been very impressed with all the support that you guys give each other. It makes me glad that I decided to (at least try to) become a firefighter.
Second, to all those that didn't get the second interview (warning, what follows is considered dangerously cheesy!): Keep your chins up! Life is going to toss you A LOT of lemons, and you gots to keep making the lemonade...
Third, why am I listing these? I was lucky enough to get a 2nd interview, and it went pretty well...self-analysis is always difficult, but I think they got the general "pilotboy12" vibe...the mojo was working that day (I think I was the 1st interview too...Mon. July 4th 9AM)
Now I wait for my Driver's abstract and Police Security Clearance to come in the mail...luckily they said that I could bring these back to them as soon as I get them.
I wish everyone here the best of luck...

Ohh, we have a couple of comedians in here, eh?! lol!!! Interview went much better this time than last time, but I am still left with an uneasy feeling, simply because it's a very scary process! haha! Scary that I may be very disappointed in a few weeks, and scary because I may get the chance to start a new career really soon (that's good scary though... YAY!). I guess time will tell, just a couple of weeks now (that is going to seem like an eternity). I sat with the same Deputy Chief and Nadine this time, Christina signed me in (she was in my interview last time), so the familiar faces really helped! I stammered a little, because you know me, I'm just not a talkative person! hee hee!
The rest of the weekend was awesome, a flying tire hit my car windshield, I locked myself out of the car on the way down there and had to crawl in the hatch, I got myself a nice little tan and we got my Aunt really drunk! hahaha! All in all, it was time well spent!!!
Take care gang and best of luck to you pilotboy!!

PS - Pilotboy, did you give them your list of references while you were there?

Glad to hear that the interview went well for ya!
I know what you mean about the Scary-ness of it all, most job interviews are stressful, but this one has your whole career hanging on it...
They did not ask me for my references, but that could be because they (and I) am waiting for my Police Ref check + Driver's abstract. I think they are going to be contacting people for that stuff by phone, at least that's what the Application Manual sez.
Sounds like your weekend was (at minimum) entertaining!
Good luck to all out there.

I gathered from the handbook that they will call you for your references, then make their final decisions the last week of July and will be offering jobs the first week of August(ish)! For some reason, I believe they will be calling for job offers as well! I check my voicemails at home about 6 times a day, but I'm not freaking out!!! lol

Ok, I have a question about references. Do you think it matters if I have 2 references from my current job or should they be from different jobs? Did anyone else use more than one person as a reference from their current job or does anyone know if this is allowable? I am freakin out already and I haven't even done the interview yet! Best of luck to everyone. We could be in training in less than 2 months!! How scary (good scary) is that?!

Hi Leslie,
she'll tell you on the phone when she calls a couple of days before your interview. I am pretty sure I was told at least three work references. I have one from my job, two from my current customer (Costco buying office) and two from a previous job. I was thinking of going back to a few years ago and using another one as well. I think the farther you can go back the better, so they can establish a pattern of your work behavior... two from your current job is good, but more from earlier is likely better.
Of course I am assuming all of this, but I did a police interview a couple of years back and they requested enough to show a pattern... makes sense!
Good luck with the upcoming interview and may I ask, are you Leslie girl, or Leslie boy! haha! It's sometimes hard to tell... just ask firebabs!! heee heee!!

How many spots again? Sometimes you can work it off of application #'s, but not in this case...30000 applicants  lol I would hazard a guess of 4 or 5 X vacant positions. Final candidates will be 1.5 X Vacancies. Calls will go out from the top to the bottom of the final list. rated on suitability, not alphabet or order the apps came in.
When I applied to Office of the Fire Commissioner, 5 positions, 300 applicants, 50 first interviews, 20 second interviews, 8 candidates for the 5 positions. (I was one of the 8)

All I know is the website had 70 spots available until Friday the 15th of July. I believe they are doing one more week, and if it's 6-7 per day, you're looking at another 30-35, so 100 or just over. They are hiring enough to fill one hall in September (24-30) and another hall in 2007, and two more in 2010 and 2011, but you never know they might hire sooner as population growth is projected between 43-50 thousand per year.
I would hazard a guess that they took their top 100 picks and are working from there! :)
I figure at this stage, I can't worry about that anymore, I've done all I can now and just have to hope for the best!! :D

Oh Seinfeld...I know this is off topic but one of my favorite exchanges:
George: Yeah! Look at me! I was free and clear! I was living the dream! I was stripped to the waist, eating a block of cheese the size of a car battery!
Jerry: Before we go any further, I'd just like to point out how disturbing it is that you equate eating a block of cheese with some sort of bachelor paradise.
George: Don't you see? I'm back in.
Jerry: All because of Wrath of Khan?
George: Yes!
Jerry: Well, it was the best of those movies.
George: KHAAAAAAAANNNN!
Back to the topic - I think next week is going to be Bananas for all of us hoping to find out...usually i'm a pretty calm person but geez this waiting game is tough. I'd rather be playing Hungry hungry Hippos...

[QUOTE=FFWannabe]Eeeks, when did they call him, do you know? If he's already done his medical, he must have been called at least a few days ago, no? Fingers crossed for everyone. I hope to hear some good news, for any of us!!!

Ah...the fax machine. I've had one calling me from Toronto for six years. Usually early in the morning. 2:00am, 3:00am what kind of insane work-aholic is this! Well it's 4:45pm... don't think it's going to ring now. Let's all stay positive. (But I was so close!) Don't worry I'll keep it together. There is always Tuesday!!

Huh...what? It looks like I might be needing some "Depends" undergarments cuz i'm crappin' my pants here...
Still no word for me either...
Spidey (love that name), thanks for the encouragement...it makes me realize why I decided to pursue Firefighting as a Career.
Have a good weekend and (as "so close" alluded to) there is always next week!

Ok, let's all relax a little bit. If there's anything that I've learned from doing recruitments it's that there is a lot of bullshit floating around and don't believe anyone until you hear it for yourself. I may seem new here but I've been logging on for a while, it's nice to know others are in the same boat as it is often said in here, however, it seems to me that most of you have your heads screwed on right and seem like good candidates. So, I choose to look on the bright side, enjoy my long weekend, and not freak out until one of you or me gets the call. Because odds are one of us will and we will all know for sure. Have a great weekend everybody!!

Hi Folks
I've already had to change my shorts three times today after reading that someone already got called. If there are any more of you out there please let us know so we regroup and get ready for the next recruitment. I haven't heard and not hearing scares me to death. I'm afraid to get the mail every day cause I know if I didn't get chosen thats how the news is coming.
Good luck to all, I hope to meet you all in September. Trying to keep up the hope.

I hope you all start in September but don't forget about the "List". It could be just as good.

Well I decided to check the mail on the way to the pool (day off and I needed a 1/2 hr swim) and sure enough there was "the" letter. I didn't really need to open it, but it did thank me for my time and say that I was unsuccessful. No, not even on the list, oh well time to get ready for the next one.
Good luck to those with their fingers still crossed and good on ya' to those moving on.
p.s. I've been stopping by to read here for a while now and I thought that I would finally say hay there. Only wish it was with better news.

Hey midway,
Sorry to hear that. I too am in letter waiting mode. I checked my messages one last at 4:55 before leaving work on Friday and figured I might as well not fret over it and have a good weekend (and I did... lol).
On to the next recruitment, my friend. There's a job out there for all of us!!! :)
Best of luck with the next one, chin up so you can see it coming! ;)
Sue :)
PS - welcome to the boards!

Okay, so I got the letter today in the mail, it's not so bad. I have been chosen as a pre-qualified candidate and there was something about meeting again in September to discuss this (I left the letter in the car...). Basically I guess, if they need to fill more spots, I won't need to "qualify" further. That's pretty cool. Down but not out....

I got the letter too. The "good" letter. I am on the eligibility list too. I'm happy but it kind of throws everything up in the air. If I got on, then I would move to Markham, if i didn't get on, I am enrolled in fire school for september and I would move to Kitchener and go to school. Now I don't know what to do. Do I go to school? Do I wait and see if I get the job? The letter says that there will be an info session in September but school will already have started! WHAT DO I DO!? I wish I knew how many are on the list and how many they will hire from it (or where I am on the list). Maybe I will call HR next week some time and find out, I'm sure they are busy enough this week. Anyone have any suggestions? Good luck to everyone else... congrats Sue, maybe I will see you in training after all, eventually. :)

hey Leslie, I was told the next class is scheduled to graduate early in 2007, so will likely start in December of 2006. That's what DC Snowball told me in the interview. I wouldn't put anything on hold for a "just in case". If it's going to be at least a year, you've got that time for schooling... I would go for the course and go from there! Just my thinking anyway!!!
Congrats!!! Sue :)

So I been wating for the "letter" and I have now recived it.... It was not the "good one" so with my head held high I move on to the next hiring. I talked with HR and they will be sending out feedback to thous who request it in mid. sept. Good luck to everyone still in the running for Markham. One day I will call myself a FIREFIGHTER just not today.

Sorry to hear about the ones that didn't make it but just chalk it up as experience. Thats how I try to look at it but when you see yourself as so close its definetly a tough pill to swallow.
And to those who made it or made the list, CONGRATS!!!!!.
Sure you're gonna have to wait a year or two but Markham is growing like crazy and you'll be there soon enough.

I think DH and FFWannabe are right, don't say no to school. Fire school is a great investment these days, especially as more and more full time departments seem to be moving towards making it a manditory qualification. Plus as a graduate of a fire college you will be even more of a qualified candidate than you already obviously are, as evident by your success in this recruitment process.
I worked for 5 or 6 years towards becoming a full time firefighter, and when I got my job offer I was in the middle of university. It didn't take me two seconds to make up my mind, I left school and started the career that I had always dreamed of. But I stayed in school right until the last minute because you just never know. I think it's a decision best made when the situation is there in front of you, rather than in anticipation of what the future might hold. All the best, and good luck!!!
