Re: Line of Duty Death of Brother Bruce Kitching

It is with deep sadness that we announce the Line of Duty Death of Brother Bruce Kitching.

Last year Brother Kitching suffered a heart injury within 24-hours of a fire shift.

For the last year Bruce fought a courageous battle, and spent the majority of the year in hospital.

Even with this battle Bruce assisted us by being one of our spokespersons on expanding the Fire Fighter presumptive Legislation to heart injury.

In April Bruce was with over one hundred and fifty (150) of his Brothers and Sisters at the Legislative Building when the amendment to the Presumptive Legislation was introduced.

A funeral for Brother Kitching will be held on Friday June 3rd. (Details to come over the printer.)

We ask all off-duty members to attend in full uniform one hour before the service. We will be lining the entrance to the church in Bruce’s memory.

We ask all Captains to notify members who are on holiday.

We ask for 100% attendance. Bruce deserves nothing less.

WINNIPEG, MB – A Winnipeg firefighter who became an outspoken advocate for the inclusion of heart injury under workers compensation has died. Heart failure claimed the life of Bruce Kitching, 48, at his home on Sunday with his family by his side.

Kitching became a spokesman for the inclusion of heart injury under workers compensation about a year ago, after he had an aortic aneurysm. Kitching collapsed at a bank four hours after a shift spent fighting a major fire at Assiniboia Downs; he spent nine months recovering in hospital.

Manitoba currently provides workers compensation benefits for firefighters who are diagnosed with five types of cancer. In April, the province announced it would expand coverage to include three other cancers and heart injury.

WINNIPEG, MB - Nearly 350 firefighters and paramedics from across western Canada, Ontario and North Dakota stood in the rain yesterday as a coffin holding the body of Bruce Kitching was carried into St. Charles Parish Roman Catholic Church.

The emergency responders attended the funeral to pay respects to the 48-year-old who died last Sunday of an aortic aneurysm he suffered on the job a year ago.

But they also came to give an emotional push to Manitoba legislation that will provide workers compensation benefits for the families of firefighters who die of lung, colorectal and ureter cancers -- as well as from certain heart injuries.
