I cannot believe the stupidity of some of the college students that we get for ride alongs. The last student we had came to the station last night to show his girlfriend around the trucks etc. He was stupid enough to bring this girl into the living quarters and the dorm of the station.
We have had another past student bring his girlfriend into the station to show her the trucks etc. and we caught him making out with her in our bunker gear locker room.
They sure did not leave a very good impression with us!

Now a days you have to spell out what you can and cant do for some ppl... and i'm not even joking.. during fire school we had a student play the little game of taking a girl back to the Firehall and well it didnt go over to well with the guys.. some ppl just dont understand what you can and cant do in somebody else's hall.. they dont get it that its like your home away from home.

I hear you, I did my placement in Toronto and the horror stories my crew told me about the previous students was brutal. It's not like you have to be the smartest person to present yourself well and do what you're told either its just some people have no common sense.
My class mostly everyone I think represented our school well but one guy got kicked off his palcement for yelling back at his captain. That must have seemed like a good idea at the time. Hahaha

Hey Billy,
I just want you to know that sure there are people out there that get the whole "I'm gonna be a firefighter" thought in their heads, they go to school, learn a hell of a lot and it gets to them they soon become Jaded. they don't think that what they are doing is wrong, Schools press out more Fire students than The Departments are hiring for. The Truth is some people are certainly silly and want to impress people of the postion they have gotten into. There are people out their that certainly want this, They want to learn from the experienced Pros, that have done this professionally for years. I know that this isn't a right, it's a privilage. I hope that you don't see every Pre-service student the same way.

From reading what has been wrote what kind of firefighters do you think that departments that are dead set on hiring from these programs are getting?

Since theyre is so many students coming out theres alot to choose from. I'd say some really good candidates. The ones that truly want the job and are suitable for it are the ones who do the extra things and it shows at the interview and on the resume. Alot of people have pre service now so the quslity isn't really the concern I don't think its just theres just as many bad ones as good ones.

Well I had a medical call at work yesterday that really bothered me and made me realize the "class acts" that graduate with the same certificate that I worked hard for.
And unfortunately the immaturity of some of the candidates probaly wont show at a interview and they'll get the job over people who really want it and who would make great candidates for the job.
Just a tip, drinking too much and swimming at a amusment park isn't a good idea. Especially when theres cops on site.

It really is true, by the time you pay for school, books, equipment, residence of some kind it may cost you upwards of 13,000 dollars!
For that reason I have opted to do things the slow way and go part time, I feel I appreciate the education more that way.

Now Now.......lets not paint all Pre-Service students with the same brush........but I do understand how the maturity level of some students can be very low. Lets face it guys, a lot of these students come right out of high school with zero life experience and after three semesters they think they're already firefighters.........not too mention most have never worked a day in their life and they don't appreciate what it takes to earn a dollar.
I'm a pre-service student........enrolled in the first class ever, out of all colleges, through distance education. This tends to attract people that are a little older, more mature and have a great understanding and appreciation for the work involved in becoming a firefighter. I do my schooling on evenings and weekends all while carrying a professional career, raising a family, volunteering in my community, working out at the gym etc. etc. etc...........so when I'm in a fire hall, I respect everything. I'm chasing the dream fellas.....and life experience, not too mention respect for the crew that takes you on, is front and centre when I'm in a Fire Hall.

Helix........I hear ya. I'm on the Joint Health and Safety Committee at work and we've had two medical calls since I joined. My first experience really put things into perspective for me. I was first responder........and even though I've got a ton of medical courses under my belt, for a split second when everyone ran to me for help I kind of went numb......then just sort of instinctively reacted. I did what I could............turned out it was a severe panic/anxiety attack. I know, doesn't sound like much..........but man, I had a million things running through my head because I had never encountered that. The second medical was a massive heart attack. Three of us worked on the guy for 12 minutes before EMS arrived......there was nothing we could do. That still sits fresh in my mind.

At my place we have lots of student doing some probation in the year. They have to be low profil and try to learn the job. Whit our experience we can determind who will be a good candidat. Our young rocky like to do joke on them whit our coaching (Sure)

Hey Pumper99,
I have to thank you... you are exactly what I see every night I step into my evening courses at school, a person who is eager to learn more about a dream/ career, I for one certainly see what it is going to take and where my life will head. I wont disagree that there are some goofs out there that Mom And Dad payed my way here attitude... But that isn't always the case, there are the few that are so very eager to learn and get anxious to jump into uniform and step foot into that burn building in the name of education...
