MONTREAL, QC - Quebec forest protection authorities have called for reinforcements to fight fires that continue to rage in the north of the province.
About 75 fires, all started by lightning, were raging in the regions west of Manic V, and north of Lac-Saint-Jean Wednesday morning. More fires are expected as a storm front passes over the region Wednesday afternooon.
Authorities have assembled provincial teams of forest firefighters, and water bombers from Newfoundland and the Northwest Territories are also in the area. Extra personnel will also be called in.
The situation remains critical in the Abitibi, Mauricie, Lac-Saint-Jean, Côte-Nord and Gaspésie regions.

MONTREAL, QC - As many as 83 fires continue to rage in northern Quebec, and 22 are out of control.
Provincial forest fire authorities recommended Thursday morning that forestry operations be suspended for 24 hours in the Abitibi, Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, Côte-Nord, Haute-Mauricie and Jamésie areas.
Both the no-burn order and the suspension of forestry operations are expected to be extented to the entire province Friday morning.
Quebec has requested help from neighbouring provinces. In addition to more than 400 Quebec forest firefighters, 165 have come from other provinces along with 6 additional water bombers. Fourty-five helicopters are being used and more have been requested. Forestry workers have also been working with firefighters since forestry operations were suspended

MONTREAL, QC – Hydro-Quebec is warning there may be more power blackouts Friday because of forest fires in northern Quebec. Power failures left 35,000 customers in the dark in southern Quebec for three hours Thursday night.
Emergency safety procedures shut down several high-tension lines from the James Bay region when they were triggered by the heat and smoke from the forest fires. Hydro officials say they are worried the same thing could happen again Friday.

Montreal, QC - More than 130 firefighters from as far west as Saskatchewan and as far east as New Brunswick are helping their northern Quebec counterparts gain control of more than five dozen forest fires ravaging the province.
Ontario has sent 65 fire fighters and Saskatchewan, and Manitoba and New Brunswick have sent 22 each, said Gerard Lacasse, an information officer from Quebec's forest protection agency.
The forest protection agency reports about 20 of the fires are considered out of control. Almost all are thought to have been started by lightning strikes.

MONTREAL, QC- Firefighting crews remained on standby in Northern Quebec this morning, hoping that today's expected rainy conditions would help dampen enormous forest fires that raged across the area.
Shifting, slower winds brought some optimism to officials who were able to suspend the mass departure of hundreds of construction workers and northern residents that had begun during the weekend.
"We're gradually able to extinguish the fires. We're waiting for the rain to begin having an impact," said Robert Lemay, an information officer for the Société de protection des forêts contre le feu, the provincial forest-fire protection agency.

MONTREAL, QC - A Canadian military Hercules transport plane evacuated 92 people Monday from a northern Quebec community threatened by forest fire. The aircraft from CFB Trenton, Ont., landed Monday morning on a gravel runway at Eastman River, on the east side of James Bay. An attempt to land overnight was aborted due to dense smoke and poor weather. The people were taken to temporary shelter Val d'Or, Que.
"This is typical of the missions that the Air Force's CC-130 Hercules crews are asked to undertake on a daily basis," acting 1 Canadian Air Division commander Brig.-Gen. Dwight Davies said in a statement.

INTERNATIONAL - MAINE, USA - Firefighters from Maine, having arrived in La Tuque, Quebec, on Sunday, were gearing up, getting additional training and getting ready to move into areas of northern Quebec on Monday night to help fight 57 forest fires that are ravaging that Canadian province.
Arnold Martin of the Maine Forest Service led the Maine contingent, which includes 20 other firefighters. They were flown and driven to northern Quebec Sunday morning. By Sunday, the fires had ravaged more than 550,000 acres of forest and grassland.
The Maine contingent was getting ready to move north, possibly during the night Monday, said Martin, a resident of St. Francis. On Monday, they were given training on how to board and jump out of helicopters that hover three to four feet off the ground when moving firefighters.

PRINCE ALBERT, SK - A forest fire doesn’t need to be translated from French to English in order to be extinguished. So more than 50 people from Saskatchewan are in Quebec to help firefighters in that province battle difficult fire conditions.
The fires are in the north-central region of Quebec, which is similar to northern Saskatchewan. There is a lot of peat moss in the area of the fire that is making things difficult. “The fire’s burning five feet into the ground,” said Bob Bruce, a duty officer with Saskatchewan Environment who is going in a liaison role.

THUNDER BAY, ON - A lull in the forest fire action in the Northwest has meant Ministry of Natural Resources crews can help battle blazes in Quebec. A total of 129 Ontario forest fire staff, including some from the West Fire Region, have been sent to battle up to 60 wildfires in Quebec. Firefighters from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick and Maine are also working in Quebec.
Fire information officer Travis Moffatt said Monday that 25 management and support staff, and 104 firefighters are helping to extinguish more than 300,000 hectares of fires which are threatening remote communities, hydro electric projects and valuable natural resources. Waterbombers from Manitoba and the Northwest Territories are also in the province.
Moffatt said crews have had little difficulty with the language barrier as Ontario dispatched as many bilingual fire staff as it could muster, and a many Quebec fire staff are bilingual.
