As a full time firefighter, you're entitled to some pretty good benefits. Such as your pension ... in Ontario, there's a municipal employees pension fund and the city will match what you put into it, so at the end of your career
(age 60 or 30 years of service) you can retire with a full pension meaning that you recieve 70% (I think) of your best 5 years for the rest of your life.
Also you accrue sick time, 1.5 days a month that you carry over year after year ... I know some captains with 300 odd sick days.
We get 2 shifts off a year, (between 1 - 5 years of service) and 12 lieu days a year. One shift equals 2 weeks off.
You are also entitled to regular benefits like medical, dental ... the usual stuff.
There's probably more that I'm forgetting, but these are the big ones.

Most fire departments websites outline their benefit packages fairly well.
