How long do you have to wait as EMT before comeing a paramedic?

Generally speaking you can sit your Paramedic course the day after you've finished your EMT-A course. The EMT-A course is approximately 1 yr (correct me if I'm wrong!) and the Paramedic course is two years. It is not a promotion, i.e. you will usually have your paramedic cert before you begin work with a full-time / professional EMS department. You do not get promoted to paramedic after an ammount of years of service as an EMT-A.
Hope this clears up your question.

I am a first year paramedic student. I worked for just under 2 years as an EMT-A before I started paramedic school. Your best bet is to take Paramedic school when you feel comfortable as a BLS provider. I have seen too many paramedic students fail practicum due to not having strong BLS skills.

Depending where you are, the EMT course may be a year. Currently in Alberta, the EMT-A course is 3 months inclass then a hospital and ambulance practium.
Like said before, make sure you are comfortable with your BLS skills, even ALS skills. Working as an EMT alongside a medic is a excellent way to pick up some skills and get ahead of the game. Plus schools like to see ALS experience.
