JASPER, AB - When lightning strikes and the beat of helicopter blades echoes through the valley, it’s a sign that the fire experts at Parks Canada are on the lookout. A nationwide detection system enables Jasper’s wardens to pinpoint the exact location of lightning strikes giving officials an edge against one of mother nature’s fiercest forces.
Using triangulation, the system gives the exact latitude and longitude of a lightning strike without anyone having to see it with their own eyes.
Over the last couple years, the ratio of human to lightning ignited fires has been roughly even, making the system an indispensable resource in fire management and prevention. “First of all, the Canadian system is the best system in the world, arguably, for knowing the fire danger or determining what the fire danger is,” said Dave Smith, Parks Canada Fire and Vegetation Specialist.
