Contrary to popular belief, most people are simply reluctant to leave a burning building. So says a recent study by Guylène Proulx, Ph.D. Proulx specializes in human behaviors during fires. She has studied human behavior in fires from the World Trade Towers fires to Europe, England and Japan. “There are cultural differences in how people respond to fires, but not so many basic differences,” she said. Proulx currently works at the Fire Risk Management Program, Institute for Research in Construction, at the National Research Council of Canada.
