CHATHAM, ON - The Chatham-Kent Fire Department is going door-to-door in Chatham and Wallaceburg conducting surveys to see how many homes have smoke alarms and if those alarms are functional.
The survey is a mandated program under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, which has the fire department collecting the information for a report that will go to the fire chief and city council, says assistant fire chief Tony Lippers. “Two-and-a-half years ago we did the whole municipality, but only hit about 10 per cent of it,” Lippers said. “This time we’re doing every single family residence in Chatham and Wallaceburg.”
Alhough the program is required for the fire department, residents can opt out by not allowing the firefighters to check the status of their alarms. “There’s a high majority of people that welcome us into their homes, but there’s always some who choose not to participate,” Lippers said.
