LONDON, ON - A London firefighter who died of brain cancer last year will be honoured this September at a national ceremony in Ottawa. Former District Chief Dale Long will be recognized at the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony along with seven others who died in the line of duty.

"This is a big surprise," Long's widow Gwen said yesterday after hearing about the upcoming memorial. "Dale loved his job and he was very proud of his uniform," she said, choking up. "This is a great honour for him."

Since his death in April 2004 at age 65, Long -- a 30-year veteran of London's fire department -- has been honoured provincially at Queen's Park and internationally in Colorado. Though he didn't die on the job, Long's death is linked to his career in firefighting, said Jim Holmes, president of the London Professional Firefighters Association.
