THUNDER BAY, ON - The Ministry of Natural Resources was battling a dozen new forest fires in the Northwest region Sunday, including a worrisome blaze about 15 kilometres north of Nipigon.

Fire management supervisor Bob Johnson said that fire grew to 75 hectares within a few hours, and was travelling quickly due to strong westerly winds. It started at Kama Point, near Ruby Creek, and was burning toward a cottage subdivision about 10 km to the east at Polly Lake, said Johnson.

MNR crews also had their hands full with two blazes east of Armstrong and at least three in the Geraldton area. “Today has been a very, very busy day in the region,” Johnson said on Sunday, “and it’s caused lots of concern there with the low relative humidities, high temperatures, and high winds.”
