KELOWNA, BC - The society in charge of dolling out donation money to victims of the Okanagan Mountain Park fire has extinguished itself. Two years after the blaze torched 239 homes and destroyed much of southern Kelowna's infrastructure, the Kelowna and Area Okanagan Fire Recovery Society has completed its work and held its final meeting.

The society's mission was to disburse the $1,551,716 it received as undesignated donations, including $375,000 from T-shirt sales conducted by Kelowna firefighters and $271,924 from the Yellow Ribbon campaign. The society also received $214,733 toward reconstruction of the Kettle Valley playground and $190,710 earmarked for the Myra Canyon trestles

"The response to our plight in 2003 was really amazing. Donations came from all over North America, and even Europe and Australia," said Hazel Christy, a city staffer who helped administer the donations. "People really rose to the occasion, locally and abroad. They were willing to help us when we needed it most." Residents of 251 households submitted claims to the society; 240 claims were paid.
