SUDBURY, ON - When there’s a serious car accident, the difference between life and death is often directly related to how fast emergency personnel arrive on the scene and how quickly they react.

Arriving quickly doesn’t mean a lick if emergency personnel don’t know exactly what they’re doing and that’s why auto extrication teams - usually made up of professional and volunteer firefighters - have become more and more commonplace. And, that’s the reason auto extrication competitions have become more and more popular.

The seven-member Sudbury Fire Services Auto Extrication Team has proven they are the best in Northern Ontario by capturing the regional competition in Elliot Lake.

ELLIOT LAKE, ON - A trip to Elliot Lake to get a feel for auto extraction competitions resulted in a second place finish for Whitney Fire Rescue recently. The volunteer hall sent 10 firefighters to the Northeastern Ontario Auto Extraction Competition this summer.

“We went there for a learning experience, just wanting to get going with it,” said Brian Nankervis, incident commander with the team. Going into the banquet when the rankings were announced, Nankervis said they were confident they had done well. Nobody on the team predicted they would capture second in the unlimited class, though.

And when the Whitney Fire Rescue placing was announced, Nankervis said the other teams gave them a standing ovation. “During the banquet it was overwhelming because we had the support from all the other teams,” said Nankervis. “It was an awesome weekend all around.”
