Do you have the 3/6/9? That's being negotiated here, it's in, but now it's just getting the details of how it's to be implemented.

Not sure what you are getting for wage but go for parity with the higest paid in Canada.. TO or Van.. we got close last time.. 61000 approx for 1st class...

Good point, or at the very least parity with relevant agencies within your municipality (i.e. police). That's an important issue with our contract negotiations, parity with the Calgary Police Service at the first class constable and first class firefighter level. Currently, their first class wage is considerably higer than ours.
Other things that come to mind (although I don't know the specifics of your department) include years to first class status...do you reach that in 3 or 5 years? We used to be 3, and now are 5. Also, pension based on your best 4 years, or best 5 years. We are currently at 5, hoping to move towards the best 4. Good luck brother, keep us all posted.

3/6/9 is the holy grail for the fire service at the moment. You guys trying to up your pension accrual rate yet? Winning the opportunity to accrue at 2.33 % was quite a victory. I've always thought that an extreme weather clause would be nice also.

Oh and how could I forget, NFPA 1710 issues...staffing, response times etc. It's something that I know we and a lot of other departments are starting to move towards and investigate, and it's sure to be something that could take some time.
Good things...it'll mean minimum manpower levels being guaranteed on all apparatus, as well as faster response times to incidents (which will most likely mean more firehalls, more firefighters to allow for quicker arrival of fire crews).

Hey DH, Think higher than the above, we could be one of your comparibles and our 1st class is 64,947 as of July 1/04. SO it should be an easy argument.

At my place, it's 5 years for first class and for the pension it's the last best 3 years.

Thanks guys.I guess a bit of background.Current first class is 63 ish, pension best 5 years.Five years and one day to first class.
I think as far as cold hard cash we are going to try for Orillia money. We are slightly bigger than them. I think at the end of their current contract they will around 69K.
I am pushing for increased staffing and better incentive for education both fire college and other related studies.I would also like push for more time while on shift to workout, study independantly vs group training all the time. The guys agree with me on that one.I also got a kid who is going to need braces better orthodontal would be nice LOL.
I think some of the standard issues mentioned here are also being brought to the table 3/6/9 better station wear, points system etc. This will be our new chiefs first negotiation so lets see what happens.
Keep those cards and letters coming, thanks again brothers.

We tried the squishie machine...It became deadlocked on the flavors of syrup that would be purchased. By the city of course.
We are trying to get parity with like sized depts in our area.A city not to far from us have a great rider in their collective agreement. They are always awarded 500 bucks less than their city police. They say it hasnt disappointed yet.The other stuff, usual roll of the dice.

We built our newest fire station right next door to a Tim Hortons, which just happens, by coincidence you understand, to be in the parking lot of the police station
