Whitby had a meeting last week with all the brass and was approved for 20 over the next year. The possible brake down was 5 Nov 1st 5 Dec 1st (I know it does not make sense) 6 April 2006 and 4 fall of 2006. I heard they have been real busy lately and having a hard time making 10 in 10 and some of counsel was pushing for more firefighters. The population is around 110000 check there web page to find out for sure.

Nov. 1st seem a little fast because they are taking resumes until Oct 12. I guess if they are going staight to interviews that would save some time.

Yes that is true but Hamilton did it. There fitness test ended on sept. 11 interviews the week of the 19th and they made job offers the 26. Whitby does not require the york test till after the offer of employment. Iam just passing on what I have been told by a good source nothing is in stone.

Negative.
I heard at the CPAT that they hired 5 full time guys already and will call for interviews for some more spots in a couple weeks.
The key thing here is "I heard". So could be BS or could be real. Either way I bet alot of full time guys applied so tough competition.

Talked with a Whitby F.F. today he has "heard" 10 to be hired around Jan 1 06. This was changed from the 5 nov and 5 dec as it did not make sence to run two recruit class so close together and the holiday season would be right after starting of class.

Hamilton is prolly one of the busiest cities in not only Ontario but Canada for actual FF.They were the only city in Ontario that has not seen a reduction in fire loss 5 years running.

Yeah they run close to 500 fires a year. So hes gonna be placed downtown and can expect a fire a day. And it's not like Toronto where theres tons of guys at a working fire.
I wonder if the fire numbers have anything to do with the prevention work or just the fact theres alot of grungy, run down places in Hamilton.

Old grungy buildings and a colourful underbelly.I worked Pt EMS in Hamilton in the mid 80s they were also very busy with legit calls, lots of nasty assaults.Shes a rough old place
Everytime I go there it feels like Im in an American city for some reason. The mountain is nice thoughLOL.

Hey, come on guys your talking about my hometown! :(
I worked the dowtown core full time for over 14 years. I saw more trauma, assaults, shootings, stabbings etc than I ever want to admit but the one thing I can say for Hamilton is that very little of it is random violence. I off course lived on the mountain my entire life so I was somewhat isolated from all that in my everyday life :)
It really isn't a bad city. From an emergency service aspect if you're looking for quiet and sedate, not the place to go. You're definately garunteed to get a wide range of calls that most places can't offer.

Yes the planning was almost futuristic,I always thought that the best place for a hospital was across the street from a steel mill and two doors up from a chemical plant that may and did catch fire.
Not putting your hometown down just stating the obvious.

Wasn't offended, I just happen to truly like the city. Believe me, I have seen the deepest, darkest, dirtiest Sh!t holes in the city ( and that was just the ambulance bases!! :p ) yet I can still appreciate the beauty of the parks, the waterfront, and some of the wonderful old neighbourhoods. As I mentioned earlier though, great place to work any Emergency service whether EMS, Fire or Police. You'll get a good range of calls and not a whole lot of rest.

Help a brother out....I got an interview with Whitby. Anybody out their got any suggestions or tips that would be helpful to me? Anything would be great...I am sick of losing sleep thinking about this
Im not on Whitby. However there are some generic things that will help you.Learn about the town, not just the dept pop, major buildings such as hospitals geography etc not so much addresses but how many how big etc.Try and learn more about the dept call volume unique services they provide size. You get the idea.
Most importantly look within yourself.Think about obstacles you have overcome, times when you were able to provide leadership or work as a team memeber to resolve an issue of some importance. Sports count, so if you need to use that as an example do so.Also be prepared for what would you do type questions.
Go in relaxed but not cocky or overly humble.Dress appropriatley make sure your shoes are shiny and dont get that funky new hair style the day before, go easy on the cologne.Take any excessive jewelry off,I did my interview with two earings in (forgot about them)nothing was said until I started training,I would advise they come out just to be safe.
If a question isnt clear ask them to repeat it.THINK about your answer speak clearly and at a volume so that the interviewers arent straining to hear you. Do not try to bullshit these people they will see right through you, if you sneak it by it will bite you in the ass eventually.Avoid rambling just to say what you think they want to hear....eventually.
Good luck let us know how you make out

Everyone is stressing about what exactly they were looking for...and to be honest you are never going to find the answers, you can not pin it on a course, job experience, location, gender or anything. Trust me, at my interivew they said that I was chosen from over 1400 applicants. Now I have a strong resume and good work experience but after speaking with some of the other guys also chosen for interivews I cant find any trend. some say you got preference if you lived in Whitby, not true, only 6 out of the 25 odd guys chosen were from Whitby. Some say they were looking for courses, again not true. i met some guys whom had been at this for 5 years and had both the Texas A&M Course and Pre-service and their OFM and and and the list goes on, then I met others whom had just their pre-service. Finally some say age and work experience, again, not true. I met guys as old as 34 and some as young as 20 with or with out work experience. So my advice to all you guys waiting for that phone call is stop trying to figure it out. I am not saying give up, I am just saying, that in order to keep your sanity its best not to try and wrap your head around how and why they chose who they did. Trust me, I have been trying to do that this whole time. And one last thing before I go, I have been hearing a lot of bitching and complaining about this recruitment for the passed 4 weeks. Some who didnt get a call are really offended that others who did, did get a call....Just be happy for these people! encourage them and wish them good luck! We are all in this together and we all want the same thing. Anyone who is serious enough and commited to see it through to the end will, I believe, be a firefighter. Some people get lucky and get it first time out and others go through 10 interivews and years of disappointment before this dream comes true. The one thing that would make this process a whole lot less painful for all of us is if this back-biting stops! Whew, okay that was a mouthful and I really hope it helps for all you guys. So in conclusion
1. Stop trying to figure it out, cause you can't
2.Never give up, ya it sucks that a lot of good guys didnt get a call but YOUR TIME WILL COME
3.Some bitching and lets encourage one another! We are all in this together
hope that crystalizes it for you

Im still hurt that you balked at the pretentious air kisses.
After all it was Toronto and you must always observe local customs, when in Rome as it were.

Well just finished the physical at york today, I am assuming whoever gets hired will hear by monday. To my knowledge of what I heard today no one has been offered a job yet, just an invite to the med/physical. Thats all the info I have, good luck to anyone in this.

So if the job offers are going out next week, how could people be getting calls on monday last week??
Where did you get the number 12 from? I heard 16 from the guys at the hall

Sorry i was kinda unclear, by 12 i meant the 12th. I called HR and they told me that additional job offers will be going out this Monday, meaning the 19th. Also, like you said they are bringing on 16 new guys.

10 guys have gotten calls for the January 9th start date. As far as I know, calls arent being made for April until closer to April. It's predicted to be a recruitement of 4 - 6 people for Spring.

I got a call today from Whitby HR.........not sure what's going on.
A credible rumor has surfaced that the 3 remaining positions for new station staffing, scheduled for the end of 2006 has been moved up to Sept. 2006 and will be 4 positions now.
