I was wondering if any of you know if there are any fire departments in Canada that have resident or sleeper firefighter programs?

Thanks.

Doesn't Gravenhurst have a residential program for students going to college there?

Fire-Etc, the old AFTS in Alberta has two programs that are residence programs. They have what is called their EST program which gets you your 1001, 472 Ops Level as well as your EMT-A. They also have a 1001 program which I believe is approximately 42 weeks which will give you your 1001 Level 2. Their website is www.fire-etc.ca. They are located next to the campus of Lakeland College and I know that for the EST program you can stay in residence right there next to the school. They are a good school, check them out.

If you're looking at going to college, make sure to find out which school the department you want to work on hires from. Some can be pretty picky.

Hi my name is scott and i have been a fire fighter for over 13 years now, vol. to wildland, to career. I have met many people in this time and the most successful ones have learned the ropes through the vol. fire service. But don't get me wrong, there are many schools out there with great track records. I live on the east coast ( home of the Nova Scotia Fire Fighter School in Waverley ) but I have heard and seen great things come from the Marine Institute in Newfoundland ( Memorial College ) I have also attended the Ontario Fire College ( Gravenhurst ) and have good reviews about it; although at that time you had to be in the fire service already to attend.

hey arrow, i just came across this posting and thought i would reply with this info. go to www.rdkb.com and follow the links to the big white fire department. they run a nine month work experience program out of their fire station where you enhance skills learned in fire school while living in the fire station. they are recruiting for next year's program which starts july 2004 and runs till april 2005. as a member of the program they supply all the accomodations and includes a season's pass to one of the best ski resorts in bc.
