McDOUGALL - On what has been the coldest weekend of the winter of 2003/04 so far, McDougall Volunteer Firefighters were out doing what they love... swimming! Well, not really swimming. After a recent donation from the Rotary Club of Parry Sound of ice/water rescue equipment, McDougall Firefighters have been training to do cold water rescues. The technique is simple, fast and effective, according to the McDougall Fire Department. Two firefighters get into ice/water rescue suits and are then tethered to long rescue ropes, which are handled by other firefighters. The primary rescuer enters the water carefully near the patient, so as to not break the ice while the other rescuer monitors the situation from nearby ready to assist.
