A 1986 fire at Alexis Nihon Plaza that resulted in the largest negligence claim against a Canadian municipality has just cost the city of Montreal another $975,000. The city has decided to settle out of court with an insurance company that filed one of 10 lawsuits in the aftermath of the 13-hour blaze that destroyed the office tower in the complex at Ste. Catherine St. and Atwater Ave. In seven other lawsuits, the Quebec Court of Appeal ruled unanimously in September against the city and Alexis Nihon Group. The city forked over $14.48 million plus $2.9 million in interest, city hall spokesperson Nadia Seraiocco said.
