Is there a suggested number of BA's per number of responding FF's

How many BA per FF does your hall have.

Thanks

Our Station has 8 BA's between eighteen memebers, here is the kicker we have the following makes 4 scott packs, 2 survive air and 2 ISI, we have no spare masks.... 4 units are on the pumper and 4 units are on the tanker. I believe we have 14 spare bottles.
We use what ever we feel the most comfortable in, and if you get a better seal on ISI we suggest you use that pack.... i don,t have an answer for you on the guidelines, we do what we can with what we have...

I am not aware of any "standard" that dictates the number of B.A.'s required. I guess a general rule would be "as many as possible". Our first out trucks carry 5, 5, and 4 B.A. units respectively. Only one not provided for is the driver/engineer.

We use Scott 4.5's exclusively. We have 76 air cylinders, including 6 one hour cylinders.

Always wear your B.A. and stay safe.

LTPVFD: by my count you have 14 BA packs. Just to put that into perspective, how big of an area are you protecting, how many runs a year - how many of those are fires requiring BA's, and how many personnel do you have?

Thanks in advance

Scotty

Hi Scotty:

We actually have 19 B.A. packs. Like I mentioned, we have 5,5, and 4 on our 3 first out trucks. We also have 3 on a reserve aerial ladder truck, one in a RIT bag (soon to be two we hope) and one spare.

We cover a population of around 12,000 residents, mostly residential, and some commercial. Our area also includes several nursing homes, long term care facilities, and several resorts. I am not sure of the square km's that we cover. We also cover an approximately 10 km stretch of major highway for vehicle rescue, and extrication duties.

We had around 260 emergency calls last year. Few actual structure fires, but any situation that may call for a B.A. to be worn, our SOP's dictate that a B.A. be worn. Only exception would be grass and brush fires.

Our one hour bottles are kept in reserve for confined space
rescue, but could be used for other situations.

Our manpower level is 2 full time (Chief and Deputy Chief) and 33 volunteer fire fighters.

Hope this answers your questions.

Regards, and stay safe !!

We are currently running 10 packs for 19 firefighters. We have had 4 structure fire in the last 2 months. This is a lot in a short span for us, our hall only runs 100 calls a year.

Our Township only purchases 2 used BA's a year for our 80 firefighters.

We run 40 volleys, 3 deputy cfs, 1 cf. A total of 24 ba packs and 14 spare bottles. At present we are useing 4500 ISI magnums. but are seriously looking at getting rid of them. We run 3 engines 1 75' ladder, a squad and a tanker plus 3 ambulances. We have a cascade fill set-up on the Squad that will fill about 8-10 bottles on scene. Ran about 300 calls last year, don't know how many med calls because we just took over the ambulance service in Jan.

we run 3 trucks, pumper and a rescue with 3 jump seats in each. our tanker has no BA's. we have 13 BA's available when pump and rescue are at a scene. pump carries 4 extra bottles, while our rescue carries 24 spare bottles, and we have 6 spare bottles back at hall, and our own filling station, which can crash fill 12 bottles, 3 at a time, in about 15 mintues. we are a 22 man roster plus chief. we run 60 calls a year, of which 12 of those are on the 400 series highway running through our area.

We carry about 10 complete sets over 3 trucks with 16 spare bottles. We also have a light rescue that is mainly used for medical and personal. For that we have a BA cage that gets stuffed into the back if it is a fire call that carries 6 additional sets of BA. We also have about 16 additional spare bottels in the compressor room that can be shuttled out if needed while the present supplies are being used and refilled.

I can't remember our call count last year, but I believe it was around 240 calls. We cover approximately a 550 Sq KM area plus mutual aid to neighboring districts. Structure fires would be a low percentage of that call base. The majority would be MVA with a number of viehicle fires.

For grass fires we use a mask and goggle set NFA approved for wildland fire fighting.

Let's be safe out there..

We pretty close in size. About 4000 now, 4 rigs, Pump 1- 5 pac's w 4 spares, Pump 2- 4 pac's with 16 spares, Rescue 3 - 3 pacs w 5 spares and 4 bottle 6000 psi cascade, Pump 4 Brush / Reserve no pacs. All Scott 2.2. each pack also has a spare mask.

21 members at full roster.

I guess to answer your question though my thoughts would be minimum would be 8 pac's on site at any given time.
If you have 2 rigs that respond then 4 packs per unit.

If you run with 3 rigs you would want to ensure again that you have 7 or 8 pacs on scene regardless of the the combination of units rolling.

Again Ideal

Absolute min would be 4 pac's 2 attack 2 RIT.

1 pair for you main attack team
1 pair for you main Rescue Search, 2nd attack team
1 pair for your RIT team
1 pair for back up team.
The only real standard is that you need to have 1 spare bottle for each pack.
