INTERNATIONAL - You wake up, go to the kitchen and pour juice on your cereal and milk in your glass. You're not alone: New research suggests many people are as mentally impaired when they wake up as if they were drunk -- even if they got a full night's sleep.
Sleep inertia, that groggy, disoriented feeling that comes with waking up, has been well documented by researchers, who say it can last a few minutes or in some cases, up to two hours. For the first time, a study has measured how sleep inertia impairs cognitive abilities, said University of Colorado researcher Kenneth Wright. "We wanted to know, how bad is this?"...
...The work also has implications for firefighters, who may have to drive an emergency vehicle shortly after being suddenly woken up.

SO True! Me, I am lucky I am not this way most of the time...my girlfriend on the other hand takes about 10 - 15 mins to fully wake and she has done some silly things in the middle of the night because she is un-aware. Gives me some funny stories to tell at least.

yup that definitely happens to me sometimes... if i'm just waking up for school or work... well... i'm kinda useless for the first few minutes. but if i've been woken up by the tones, adrenaline has a remarkable way of helping along that 0-60 at 3am. i'm usually wiiiiide awake before the tones are even finished

I am constantly in a "groggy" state. Over 23 years of shift work will do that. :( My body never really knows if it is daytime, night time, or somewhere in between unless I take some time off.
Sleep can be a problem as well. I can be dead tired, and not be able to sleep, but sit in my chair watching tv, and I'll go right to sleep. Kinda sucks to wake up and find out that the game you were watching is over.
I can, however, be in a sound sleep, and hear the click of the repeater cutting in before the tones go off. Sometimes I'mm already dressed before the first set of tones is finished... The adrenaline boost does wonders... :D
Most mornings, I'm on my second cup of coffee before I'm awake enough to function properly.
Stay safe !!

When the horn in the hall goes off in the middle of the night I am fully wide awake and full of adrenaline by the time my gear is on and I'm going to the truck. Not an issue here.
