NORTH VANCOUVER, BC - Finding adequate space for ambulance stations is becoming a provincial-wide issue, says the regional vice president for the union that represents ambulance paramedics. “The problem is Victoria head quarters doesn’t seem to have any motivation to provide stations for us,” said Mike Binns of CUPE Local 873.

“We’re really affected in North Van because we only have one [central] Ambulance station.” The ambulance station at Lions Gate Hospital was forced to relocate yesterday for the expansion of the emergency ward. A temporary site for the station was provided at 13th and St. Andrew’s Ave., the original location for the ambulance service used prior to the 1980s, but Binns insists the facility is not adequate for the long-term, contending it does not provide proper shelter for the vehicles.
