Significant world events have contributed to the review of emergency management (EM) methods and trauma support programs by government and industry in search of best practices. Psycho-social programs, such as crisis support teams for emergency response personnel and families of victims as well as employee assistance programs, are all providing unprecedented levels of support. Training and preparation are the keys to an effective crisis response to the changing nature of emergencies, human and natural disasters such as technological accidents, infectious disease outbreaks and terrorism. EM programs require effective partnerships between emergency and psycho-social services.

The University of Toronto Crisis Response to Disaster and Workplace Trauma Certificate program is intended for emergency service and planning professionals, child protection workers, and mental health professionals who plan and manage crisis response programs, and who provide direct crisis intervention services in the wake of disaster and workplace trauma. The program is comprised of six two-day modules – Individual Trauma Response & Interventions; Mass Disaster in the Community; Organizational and Group Interventions; Interventions with Friends and Family; Emergency Planning and Management; and Developing Trauma Response Teams – commencing January 26–27, 2006 and running monthly to June 22–23, 2006. The instructors and contributing faculty are all experienced professionals specializing in various components of the field.

Participants are required to register for the entire program and are unable to attend individual modules, unless granted special permission by the Program Director. The fee is $325 per module. OASW (Ontario Association of Social Workers) members receive a 10% reduction. The full-time student discounted fee is $225 per module.
