VICTORIA - B.C.'s insurance industry needs to do more to encourage the use of non-flammable building materials while discouraging homes from being built too close to forests, according to former Manitoba premier Gary Filmon. In his report on B.C.'s disastrous wildfires of 2003, Filmon suggests the insurance industry offer incentives to homeowners who take steps to lessen their fire risk. While Filmon believes building code changes are necessary, he said British Columbians living in high-risk areas who build homes with non-flammable materials, away from forests and with appropriate vegetation should be rewarded with better insurance rates.
