Hello everyone,

Im new to this site, I have been coming here and reading the forum for a year and a half now and thought it was about time I signed up. Like the most of you I am trying to become a career FF.

For the guys on this site that are in Calgary process: Have any of you heard how many classess or guys they will be taking on in the next year? (I am at the final stage waiting for the CPAT and Vo2 max) It seems like there a lot of us waiting for the final call.... From what i understand there is at least one class going on right now??

And here is a question for the career FFs on this site: Is it ok to call HR or the recruitment team and ask them questions about timing and numbers?? or is it tabu??

Any ways thanks for the great info over the last year and a bit!!

Welcome to the site Dial911...glad to have you aboard!

What I can tell you about Calgary...a recruit class (Class I-2006) just graduated on February 1st, and class II is already put together and starting training soon if they're not already in (I'm on vacation right now, so I haven't seen the FD notices for a couple of weeks that would tell me exactly when they started).

I would imagine that they would probably do another two classes this year, maybe more. That's just based on past years numbers, so I'm not sure what this year will hold exactly. It all comes down to what positions they need to fill, so based on a number of factors, the budget, the opening of new halls or the manning of new apparatus, as well as the number of firefighters who retire. For that reason it can sometimes be difficult to know exactly how many guys they are going to need.

As far as calling recruitment, I see no problem with calling and asking if there is any sort of a timeline that they have in mind as far as their hiring needs. As long as you don't go crazy and call all the time it should be fine, the recruit team is pretty approachable, and they do understand that it can be difficult and frustrating to have to wait for long periods of time and be so uncertain of what is going to happen. The only thing to keep in mind, often recruitment doesn't know when they'll be able to hire the next batch of recruits, again, they can be at the mercy of all those factors before they will be told by the powers that be that they have openings for another 20 guys. But call anyway, and I'm sure they can set you up with at least some information.

I'm not a recruit officer, so in this matter my opinion counts for about nothing LOL...but if you're as far in the process as you are, your chances I would say are pretty good. They are only going to need more guys, and they will be needing them sooner rather than later. You're in a pretty desireable spot! Good luck with it all!

AB:)

Hello everyone, I am just wondering if someone could update me on whats going on with Calgary. Ive been on holidays for the last month (its rough i know!) And when i checked my email, i had recieved an update on a class in april? and then the next one said that the recruitment office has moved. Do you know if they have made the calls yet for the next class? I hope i havent missed it!!

I am also wondering if they still have the 1001 recruits and non-1001 recruits? Or are they mixing them again? Any info would help me catch up on whats going on!! I also noticed that it says they are giving you 8 weeks notice fot the TKT instead of the 6 weeks. Is this true too?

And congrats to firehall.com on a great 9 years, what an awesome service you provide to volunteer, career, recruits and the general public!!!! keep up the good work!!

Hop....., Do you know if they still have seperate recrutiments for 1001 and non-1001 people? I cant seem to find that part anymore on the web page where it use to say that if you had a 1001 the class will be 4 weeks and if you dont it will be 6-7 weeks. Have thay changed that? I hope so, i have my 1001 but it would be nice to spend 6-7 weeks in training before going on the floor to the wolves!! jk guys ;)

Hi Seinfeld. I just checked the website and if you go into the part on the website that says hiring process and scroll to the bottom of the page it still says there is a four week for those who have 1001's. But who knows....if I hear anything I will be sure to post it and I would appreciate if you do as well. It should be coming soon. Good luck.

Heard a VERY well placed rumour that the CFD will no longer be doing 4 week 1001 classes due to the various levels of competency found between 1001s.

Glad to hear that. I never liked the idea of two different recruit training processes. IMHO everyone should be going through the same training to start with their department no matter what their previous background. Talking with guys that went through that 4 week program they said that they got between two and a half and three days of SCBA versus the traditional full week. I have always said that a bread and butter skill like SCBA needs more than a couple of days, I don't care how great you are with the SCBA. It's also about becoming familliar and competent with the intricacies that the departmant has as opposed to how someone may have been taught or trained in the past. 4 weeks just never seemed like long enough.

So do you know if this has already started or is it something to come? Is the next class (from what i hear in April) going to be a mix of guys like it use to be?

I am wondering if it ok to contact the recruitment office to see where one stands in the process. (and yes i do realize they have just moved)Has anyone out there done this? And if so, what kind of response did you get? Or is this a bad move to bother them?

Hello Seinfeld101.

I received an e-mail from CFD as I am sure several others have inviting me to the CPAT orientation. I am booked for the orientation on July 10th. Not a clue when the next one will be. This could be for a class for the end of the year who knows. Hope all is well and good luck.

When did you guys get your resume in? As I'm sure you know they stopped accepting resumes on the 15th of January. I got mine in on the 14th :/ They conducted an information validation with me, but that was the first I heard from them so far. I know that they have more applicants than they have positions for and as a result will take some time to get through them all. Any comments?

Hi. I had my application in last November.....I went through several stages of the testing and am now booked for the cpat orientation in July. I guess there may be one more class in October or November and I might be in that one if they have it. So just the cpat and medical. The job offer could come at any time or after one of these next stages. Good luck and I hope you are moving along as well.
