TELKWA, BC - Telkwa’s fire chief is putting out a desperate plea for help. The Telkwa Volunteer Fire Department is in need of volunteers, Chief Stoney Stoltenberg told The Interior News, adding that although they have a core group of approximately eight to 10 people who have been with the department for a long time, they are having a difficult time keeping members around.
“Over the years, people come and go,” he said. “Telkwa is a transient town, so people join, stick around for a year or two, but not for long periods of time — you train them and then they leave.” Stoltenberg said the department currently has 18 members, and although it is less than 10 under what he would like, he said a large majority of the members are not always readily available.
“We need to get more people so that we have a greater pool to draw from,” he said.
