TORONTO, ON - A third of Toronto's 179 fire trucks are so old that insurance companies will not provide coverage for the vehicles unless the city pays an extra 15 per cent to cover potential accidents and damage pay-outs.
It is a difficult situation for the fire department as they balance the costs of new trucks against maintaining an aging fleet. Every day a team of mechanics strives to keep the emergency fleet road worthy. "They're outstanding mechanics," fire department spokesperson Rob Anselmi said.
But help is on the way. Within the next six months the fire department will take delivery of a dozen new trucks. Another six trucks are being ordered this week, followed by a planned order of ten more for this autumn.
