QUALICUN BEACH, BC - When Qualicum Beach town council voted in favour of purchasing a new ladder truck for the volunteer fire department, there was no shortage of grumbling about others benefiting from the equipment without helping to pay for it.
The used, 1996 HME aerial ladder truck carries a price tag of $345,000 (U.S.). Paying for it will require a two per cent tax increase to town residents over five years.
At Monday night's council meeting, Fire Chief Chris Jancowski stressed that purchasing the truck would be a good move for the municipality, considering the fact that a new apparatus would cost upwards of $1 million and Qualicum Beach would get at least 15 years of service from the used unit. He said the current aerial apparatus has a significant number of hydraulic leaks, forcing crews to refrain from lifting the bucket over 25 feet or so.
