I actually got a job offer from Suncor about 4 months ago, but the pay was not near enough to live up there. They offered me around $75000 a year which is an excellent salary don't get me wrong or anything, but to buy a house up in Fort Mcmurray is like $500,000 to $800,000, very expensive. So I had to turn it down, to me all the way up north and to pay that much for a house they would have to pay me 120,000 a year.

Your base salary is $75,000 thats a pretty good start, but also consider all the overtime availible and the other benefits such as savings plan and maybe even stock options. This is a good opportunity for anyone, the training is also pretty sweet!

Ya I agree but if the interest rate goes up on a mortgage that big, your fu**ed. It would be good for a single guy that could go up there and live in a condo or apartment. But ya other than that it would be an excellent job.

Did they offer you any kind of accomodation, or was that totally up to you to find? An uncle of mine worked up there for a few years with a big oil and gas company as a purchaser, and his company owned a large apartment building in Fort MacMurray. They put their employees up in there as a part of their contract, and they even had shuttle bus service from there to the offices and to some parts of the plant. Just curious if anything like that is offered to the firefighters that they hire? Maybe it's only for the people working closer to town...just curious...

No nothing like that, if they did I would probably be working there right now. I was also thinking of commuting from Edmonton but that would have got tiring fast, and very expensive.
