EDMONTON - Firefighters rescued a 14-year-old boy stranded on a tiny ice floe in the middle of the North Saskatchewan River on Friday afternoon, a situation many said could easily have turned into a tragedy. Zach Taschuk and two friends had been skipping stones around 1:15 p.m., when a chunk of ice broke free from a Terwilligar Park riverbank. The two other boys jumped clear, but Zach floated slowly downstream for more than 30 minutes. The teen's shocked buddies watched as the ice floe rested precariously against a mid-river ice jam about 100 metres away, and the fire department's river rescue team rushed out. They pulled him off the ice, into their boat and onto the shore.
