Hey wannabe,
Some of the best meals I have had have been at the "house"
but I would not tell my wife that, but that also causes other problems, my first year on, I gained 15lbs and not muscle, I had to learn to say "I'll take the small one".....;-)

DEG'S right about the pounds man! Especially if you happen to be working through some of the holidays. My most memorable meal at the hall was last Easter, we did up an elk roast with cajun prawns and twice baked potatoes--mmmmmmmm---potatoes! ;)

I agree with Deg21, you have to learn to eat in moderation. The old saying eat till it hurts will get you in trouble down the road. Most meals we have now are more healthy than they were years ago when everything was in bulk and covered with gravy!!! Most guys on the job are looking after themselves alot more nowadays(myself included) which is nice to see....

Hmmm...so it's true. I saw a guy I knew from way back who now is a local firefighter... thought he looked a little rounder. Happier! But rounder too LOL
Guess I better get on those cook books then... sheesh
And I hope they have a cardio machine in the hall.

Sleep until you're hungry, eat until you're tired. It's all about balance.

My personal opinion is a lot of guys in the hall think they are good cooks, but very few actually are. But the ones who are, are a Godsend.

No matter how good guys think they are, on our job if they aren't good they sure hear about it in a hurry....and there cooking days are pretty much over......:D

In my station you can never go wrong with quantity.
For most guys it is the quantity not quality.
We are lucky we have a great cook and Saturday night tradition for us is a roast pork meal with all the goodies. Then if we are ludky we get to catch some of Hockey Night in Canada!! We get paid for this!!!!

What does a feed cost you guys each meal?? We usually shoot for about 5 bucks a guy......

We typically come in around $5 per guy. If our lunches on days come in under 5 then we use the extra to make something tasty on one of the nights. A couple of my fav's are #1-candy peppered salmon and #2-mango lemongrass chicken in philo(sp?) pastry with roasted peppers.:)

Is there a designated cook on your crew or do you take turn's with the feed?? We have a couple guys on shift that step out and cook on a regular basis.....BC....:D

Most of the time we all fend for ourselves, with leftovers from home,a can of soup or a sub from down the block. Being we only have a maximum of 4 on a shift ( chief during the week,a captain, pump operator and a firefighter) it's sometimes not worth it to cook a big feed. when we do it's usually the same couple of guys ( myself included) that like to do the cooking. it's not as bad as it sounds because there is no shortage of cash for supplies or offers of " I'll clean up if you do the cooking" from the guys who aren't as handy in the kitchen as we are.
