OTTAWA,ON - Deputy Fire Chief Bruce Montone told yesterday's gathering that a key part of a firefighter's training is learning that he is never alone and that grieving families can count on their support. The camaraderie among firefighters and other emergency workers is what makes them stronger in their fight to keep their communities safe, he said. With the tolling of a bell, they honoured their dead and vowed they would be "always remembered -- never forgotten."Source: canada.com (http://www.canada.com/ottawa/news/city/story.html?id=9aeb9b4a-1e0c-477c-948a-77b5f482f563&k=91354)

OTTAWA, ON - Ottawa firefighters, their families and community supporters gathered at City Hall Sunday morning for a memorial service honouring those who lost their lives in the line of duty, and others - active and retired - who died this year. The Ottawa Fire Department Band led a sombre procession to Festival Plaza, where colleagues laid down dress caps and rang a gleaming silver bell to mark the deaths of Patrick Thibodeau, Andy Rawlings and Bob McVeity, as well as 13 others. OTTAWA, ON - A MONUMENT to Ottawa's fallen firefighters will be larger than life if enough money is raised to build the impressive structure outside City Hall. Ottawa artist Louise Carota showed off her concept of the monument after city firefighters held their annual ceremony to remember their late colleagues. Carota's vision, now depicted in a model and drawing, includes two "larger-than-life" statues of firefighters, which would stand over seven feet tall. One firefighter is saving a victim and the other is shooting a stream of water overhead.Source: ottsun.canoe.ca (http://ottsun.canoe.ca/News/OttawaAndRegion/2006/06/12/1626887-sun.html)

OTTAWA, ON - Today, City Council approved a proposal to build a permanent memorial to honour Ottawa's fallen firefighters. The result of over five years of planning, the Ottawa Firefighters Memorial will be located on the northeast corner of Festival Plaza outside City Hall at 110 Laurier Avenue West. "Fallen Firefighters hold a special place in the hearts of all Ottawa residents," says Mayor Bob Chiarelli. "Firefighters put their lives on the line for our residents every day. Their remarkable bravery and courage are truly inspirational. This Memorial will underline their sacrifices, and their daily contributions to our community."Source: ottawastart.com (http://ottawastart.com/story/4240.php)
