Does anyone know any college site that offers fire service related online courses?

Not for getting on the job, but more so for specialities and career advancement.

Hey DEG21,

What type of courses are you looking for specifically? Are you looking towards a degree in fire science? There are many out there. Emergency management?

I'm sure you know about the ones on the FEMA site. Quite a few.

Are you looking to specialize in one area?

Hey Scoot,

The only one I have come across is the one at S.A.I.T. in Calgary AB.

http://www.sait.ca/academic/health/overview.htm

Looks like you can get your EMR or EMT-A by "self study". It's mostly online with a shorter amount of inperson classes required and a series of exams.

I haven't looked at it to intensively because I think I'd rather do the whole course in person seeing as they are such hands on skills.

I'm sure there are others out there... probably in the States.

I took my EMR and EMT-A at SAIT, I will tell you first hand that myself and 18 others in the same program will not recommend SAIT. They need to revamp their whole program. If at all check with NAIT instead, not sure if they offer EMR or EMT-A by correspondance but there is tons of private schools yu can take your EMR and EMT-A through after working hours. Check www.flatelineresponse.com. Just another advice make sure you visit the school before registrating and make sure it is CMA accredited.

Good luck, hope this helps.....

Hey all;

Speaking of online training, check out http://www.danatecinteractive.com/fireconcepts.html for some basic stuff.

There's also an ICS course on www.danatecinteractive.com

The ICS course says "Coming Soon", but I've already taken their I-100, 200 and 300-- they're really good for incident command courses.

I just finished my Certificate in Fire Service Administration through Dalhousie's College of Continuing Education. It's a total of 4 years which included Fire Service Leadership and can be completed either by correspondence or online. A good learning experience for anyone, especially if you are, or plan on becoming an officer. The following is a link with the courses they offer for the fire service.

Buddy, if your going to get involved in medical courses or a paramedic program, you are best to do it in person, because there is a ton of benefit to after class scenerio training with fellow students, etc. that you dont get or do with an on-line course !

Sorry Wannabe, I think the advice I gave you, is more for Scooter, who you were originally helping. So, I hope Scooter, you had a peak at what i offered to Wannabe ?

WHAT in terms of "symptom relief" are you offering to first responders???? And WHY? Not as a first responder or a FF and not even a Ministry certified PCP can you administer ANY type of drug or even ASSIST anymore or else you will find yourself in court! Has there been a change in that law stature I am unaware of, or have I been miss informed somewhere along the lines ??Also, I heard with the new CPR protocols your introduction to the changes has to be done "hands on " in order to get signed off and given credit for the new procedures ????

That all depends what province you're operating in.....

Beetlebailey,

I couldn't find what you were making reference to, BUT...

Working as a PCP in Nova Scotia, we can give ASA, Nitro, Salbutamol/Ventolin, SC or IM Epi (1:1000), SC Glucagon, Oral Glucose, and Tetracaine Eye Drops. If you have the endorsements, you can also start IV's and intubate. These are all under written protocols and procedures approved by our provincial medical director and Emergency Health Services Nova Scotia. MFR's can assist a patient in taking their ASA and nitro provided vitals are stable.
