Hey guys whats up.... could you all tell me what level of medical training your volly dept gets and who gives you the training. We had a great medical officer leave a few months back that was training us at the EPC level. He was a Paramedic that gave us all the training for little cost to the dept. Now we must find A level to train too and I would like to know how everyone else is trained and who gives you the training. Thanks.

Most of our department has taken the Basic First Aid/CPR I think( I hope so anyways), and there's a handful of people that are currently trained as a Medical First Responder.

And by "handfull".....I think you mean 19-20 members. We had 75% of the department trained in MFR at one time, at last count it was right around 20 members trained to at least the MFR level. ;)

We (Like most) have most of the department trained in Standard First Aid. There are a couple of us who are Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) trained.
We do training nights where we have the department work with the spine boards, KED, etc so that they have some idea of what they are doing if they are asked to help out the EMR's or the Ambulance crew.

My old FD trained to the First Responder III through the JI (justice instatute). I believe it's official name, according to my certificate was "Emergency Medical Assistant First Responder Level III." We would also get the spinal endorsment and CPR C as well.

There was one guy who didn't think he could do the FRIII program, so he took FRI, which was pretty much just basic first aid. After wasting our time on that course it was decided to stick to the FRIII for the standard.

I have my OFAIII now and I am looking at taking the EMR program only because I don't have the time or $$$ to sink into taking PCP right now!

Just in case you didn't know, the JI is offering a bridging program for OFA 3 to EMR. I just found out about it (3 years after going to Calgary to get my EMR :( ) and it is being offered at several locations around the province. Check out the JI's website for dates etc. I think it costs around $ 700 and is about a week long. You still have to get licensesed by the EMA Licensing Board but I was reading that your certification period is longer.

EMR is a good course and I found it made me a much better Medic. Good luck.

Our dept. is 100% trained with Standard First Aid and Level C CPR with defib, we have 15 Medical First Responders (EMR as per the NOCP) and 4 paramedics- 2 PCP and 2 ACP. A great way to cover all of your areas would be to have all of your dept. trained to Standard First Aid and Level C CPR with defib, and then anyone who wants, can go ahead and do the MFR (EMR) course....just my thoughts

Everyone has first aid/CPR and most of our guys are also EMT's. Problem is our departmet has not maintained that EMT status. Two of our guys are career paramedics and one is located in our region. My understanding is that he can get away with doing more on scene. When he steps out of the pumper he changes hats and works for the RHA.
