Reporting to the Commissioner of Community Services, the Fire Chief will act as a model and champion of change and a strategist to ensure that the City achieves its vision of being the enterprising spirit and strength advancing our City to be a high-performing, innovative, value-drive, results-oriented team that provides responsive, high quality and courteous service.

You are responsible for the general and financial management of the Fire & Emergency Services Department comprised of the Operations, and Training, Prevention & Communications Branches. Key responsibilities include community risk assessment, fire master-planning, station location and staff/equipment deployment, overseeing emergency response/ communications/ reporting/ investigation and attending/ commanding at major incidents; overseeing Fire Prevention/Plans Review/ Inspection and Public Education activities and events; negotiating mutual/ automatic aid agreements; related community, media and inter-department/ government liaison; staff supervision, development and training; policy and standards recommendation and SOP/ SOG authorization; departmental business planning and capital/operating budgets; Council/Committee report preparation and meeting attendance; developing the Emergency Plan and leading the City’s Emergency Control Group; overseeing the procurement of equipment/ apparatus.

Applicants must have excellent leadership and communication skills with the ability to create and articulate a vision and strategy that will inspire and empower a strong staff team, while holding them accountable. Excellent conceptual, project/ time management, analytical, facilitation, negotiation skills; Ability to think and act strategically in a political and community service environment, to build strong external alliances/ partnerships, to align departmental programs/ services with divisional and corporate goals/ objectives, and to champion the mission and values of the City; possess at least a University degree or Community College Diploma in Fire Protection Engineering or related discipline accompanied by post-graduate studies in Business and/ or Public Administration and Management studies. Significant demonstrated experience in a senior officer capacity in a Fire Department including supervisory experience in a unionized Fire environment.; and good computer skills including good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
