this may sound crazy...i think it is,..but a colleague of mine told me that somewhere in this planet, a group of scientists are carrying a study on extinguishing FIRE with SOUND.

this news is so credible that one of our ministries is already looking into this possibilities. any idea how to get the source of this new discovery?

I'm no scientist, but I'm not sure how that would be done... I know that some research was done years ago on using sonics for molecular disintegration - if it's along those lines, I would think that a sonic anti-fire weapon could be potentially detructive.

If I happen to get hit with a hose stream, that's one thing, but I can't say I'd like to think what might happen if I was in the sonic cone of whatever this ends up being :)

Next fire I go to, I'll get the crew to stand back and we'll all yell at it.
I'll let you know the results :)

Wow. This thread is ancient... slow day huh;)?

Some people who like sound talking about it (third item in the "Program Highlights"):
http://www.acoustics.org/press/150th/press_release.html

The people trying to extinguish fire with sound:
http://www.westga.edu/~rgsfop/ (http://www.westga.edu/%7Ergsfop/)

Looks like it is intended for space firefighting:confused::

Conventional fire extinguishers do not work properly aboard spacecraft, because the extinguisher's foam tends to spread out in a low-g environment rather than smother a fire. Therefore, students from the University of West Georgia are testing to see if sound waves can extinguish a flame in a low-gravity environment. In the meantime, the Prometheus Project, which contains graduate-student and faculty advisors, has obtained an encouraging sign: sound can repeatedly extinguish small flames in the 1-g environment of their lab.

judging from the videos on the site, it looks like a good excuse for a few uni students to drink beer and crank some tunes on school provided speakers... all in the name of science.

So somewhere on this planet, a group of scientists are carrying a study on extinguishing FIRE with SOUND, unfortunately to be used outside of the planet. The good news is that Firehall.com is the third result in Google (http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=%22EXTINGUISHING+FIRE+WITH+SOUND%22&btnG=Search&meta=) for "extinguishing fire with sound".:D Can't wait to hear that as an answer for our "where did you hear of us survey"

IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!

2 examples.....

My daughter yelled at her birthday candles from close range, they went out.

We yelled at a grass fire once , and by the time it reached the river......yup you guessed it, it was pretty much out.

Well there you go, you have saved NASA millions on developing this technology, all they need are a handfull of small children on the shuttle and there's your onboard fire crews :)
