Does anyone know how it works with applying with an American Dept. Do you need to have previous citizenship or can you apply as a Canadian and then deal with all that when/if you get on?

Most american FDs will have a process set up for Canadians which includes them sponsoring you to get your green card/immigration paperwork (provided they offer you a position).

Actually if you look the majority you need to be a citzen already or have be landed immigrant.. its not an easy thing if you arent a citzen already.. To be sponsored by a department they have to prove you are not taking a Job away from a qualified american.

What he said.
I hope you are young I think on average if you are not from a lottery eligible country and have no "special" skills its about a 7+ year wait.
I would start with the US consulate or Email the city(s) and find out what their eligibility requirements are. Some will only look at ex military some require college credits etc.

Fact is alot of depts give bonus points to ex-military. So even if you score the higher on the exam and physical, you may not get an interview.
How bad do you want it? I hear they're looking for help in Iraq...

I almost went to Uzbekistan for a year with Haliberton..... $100,000 American, no taxes, deposited into your off-shore camen islands account and all transportation/lodging/everything paid for.... only problem was the fine print said I had to do a year in Iraq and this was back before they found Hussian and things where crazy over there (slightly more crazy than they are now)........ needless to say I neglected to sign the contract!

If you go to IRAQ.....Be VERY VERY careful. Good luck and as far as I'm concerned a future employer will either give you huge bonus points for that experience or just think you are plain nuts.
