In NL you have to do a written test and a road test. The problem there for me is you have to pay for it yourself and have a vehical to do your road test in.

I guess you will be starting in 1 or 2nd week of jan. which means that you don't do your level two until around 3/4 of your worktern is done. if they do start it say for ex: 3 weeks into your work tern request for OSSC to get there ass in gear and get you level 2 done before closing date for applications. anymore questions just ask and I'll help in anyway.

Certainly seems like there is quite abit of interest from various members on the board what SJRFD is doing come the new year, myself included. Would be sweet to be back on the rock; serving the people of such a fine city. Has anybody called admin downtown St.John's to find out for certain what their doing ? Is there anybody on the board or entertaining this thread currently working for SJRFD ? Would love to hear what you know. When I did my OJT with St.John's Regional 5 years ago now; it was quite apparent that most guys had their hands on the pulse and ears tight to the ground. I know that things have changed with regards to management over those few years, but I'm sure it's one of the best damn Dept.'s in this fine country of ours. Look forward to everybody's correspondence. Take Care,

Thanks for the reply HRECRUIT, very disappointed to see that SJRFD hasn't changed it's ways. The days of short lists should have died with the days of the horses. Obviously not. Have a few friends that have spent some time on that short list with nothing positive to say about it. The Admin @ SJRFD expects you to put everything else on hold when they need you. How are you supposed to explain to an employer that I'd like to have flexible hours so that I can cater to the Fire Depy. How are you to explain to a loans officer when you apply for home loan that I might et 25% hours this year. Where is the logic in that. Happy to hear an update but not it's content ! Guess I didn't do wrong when leaving home. Thanks

hrecruit, what's a part time list??
double0seven
11-25-2004, 04:31 PM
The part time list he is reffering to is basically guys who have been hired by the department but are still waiting for full time positions. Some usually only get maybe 3 months work out of the year, vacation relife and what not.
medic8074
11-25-2004, 06:41 PM
To add more to what double0seven has to say; you can end up starting on that short/part-time list and may remain on it for years which many folks have. It still boggles my mind how people wait for these gigs, and how many people actually apply for these positions. Oh Well I guess I can save myself a resume again bothering with SJRFD ! *shakes head*

Home is home I guess. me I'am all about the tradition of the fire service I am third generation Firefighter. if my grandfather and or any other smoke eater that has been around seen the way some things are run these days they puke. SJRFD has 170 full time menbers I know at least 65 % there all great guys I mean that. guess what I triing to say is when your fire chief (there fire chief ) has never worked a day in his life as a firefighter nor worked his way up the rungs I guess that would tend too make you unhappy
the list I know half doz of the part timers on it. this summer will be there 4 or 5 year. which is around maybe 11 months work they have done in that period.

Really? I was talking to HR today asking them if they had the results of the medicals and she told me that when all '25' are complete we will be notified? So maybe it is 33 but she said the number 25 today. I don't care if it is 100 as long as I'm one of them! Mid June we'll know for sure, or so I'm told.

To all those who've been successful in obtaining employment with one of the oldest and most experienced departments in Canada. Whats the latest for those members who have been hired. Are you going to be granted full-time immediately now. I'm starting to view this hiring as a "Not As Advertised" recruitment ? Why they'd ever do that, err ! Either way, I'm quite happy for all those that will have the opportunity to work side by side with such a fine troupe of gents and ladies.

No they will still start as "casual" same as the last 2 recruitments. The previous group may be polished off before the summer is out, so its possible a couple of these new recruits won't be laid off in September, certainly some of them will be full time by January, and Managment is expecting to hire again in 18 months. Which would lead one to believe that for some of these guys their wait will be pretty short. Its all in the luck of the draw, literally.

So once they are hired it's not full time??...do they at least do some other job as a city employee while they wait so they still get a paycheck??....Never heard of a hiring practice like this before.....BC...

Actually Saint John, used to hire just Holiday Relief before when they started and then if anyone left then they'd all get a shot at getting full time... but the thing with the Holiday relief it was just for stat holidays it was anytime anyone took vacation.. so you could get a lot of time in.

So the "casual" guys need to hold down another job while they wait for someone to go on holidays on the FD. Has that always been the way the hiring is done?? I quess getting the "casual" spot is sort of getting your foot in the door and waiting for your time to come I quess....correct??.....BC...

Thats the way its been done here since 98, its not all that bad though as the lucky ones get full time after a year or so We hired 20 in 98 and 25 in 2001. There are only about 5 left on of the second group to go full time, and all of them came on yesterday, none will likely be laid off this fall. Now the first 12 of the new group of 33 have been hired, I suspect the other 2 groups will get a shorter summer hiring period though.

Not trying to be a s@#t disturber here, but.I was having a discussion the other day at work and I mentioned a dept east of TO that hired P/T FFs.These were scheduled P/T not paid on call this dept had FT,I worked with medics who claimed they worked there PT. Two guys on my shift are on our executive and they informed me in no uncertain terms that the IAFF does not recognize or allow part timers.Did I misunderstand them or does your local have special dispensation.
I know that when the Harris govt was trying to amend the FPPA they wanted to allow municipalities to hire P/T.The IAFF/OPFFA lobbied and successfully defeated this.I think it was bill 68.I was not on the job at the time but I do remember numerous stories in the media and a couple of demonstrations at Queens Park.
Just curious, whats the difference between there and here.

But are they working full time hours? Are they sworn into the IAFF?
Many employers both public and private will hire someone to a contract that usually clearly states that they are not FT and do not have the same rights and privleges as the full time employee. Some will be worded so its clear that hours are not guaranteed and that you are expected to be available with minimal notice.

That could be... I'm not 100% sure exactly how it works here I just know that when they started hiring in SJ it was usually termed "Holiday Relief" and they covered vacation and time off of the regular guys, and then if they needed another regular they took from the holiday relief batch.

TO EMS does not have PT on the road. They hire PT in dispatch. They are a different local than the outside workers.Local 416 does not hire any part timers.I was talking to an old colleague he was telling me he thinks that its going to a big issue in negotiations this year. The city wants to hire PT to reduce OT costs etc. Most every other service in the province does hire PT.In some its the only way to get to fulltime
They are also looking at megastations...as in you book on and go sit on a street corner for the rest of your shift.Totally f#$ked.

The official term in our case is casual. They are dues paying members of our local. When they are called in they are assigned shifts and work 24 hour shifts just like the rest of us. For instance the group that just came to work will be here steadily on the shift theyare assigned till they are laid off in late August/ early Sept.
