COQUITLAM, BC - Tri-City high school students will learn much more than academics starting in January - they'll learn how to save lives. Thanks to a one-time grant of nearly $53,000 from the Envision Credit Union Charitable Foundation, every Grade 10 student in Coquitlam - as well as Langley, Hope and Kitimat - will be taught CPR Level C (basic rescuer) as part of their regular physical education curriculum.

I think its a good idea to teach kids CPR in school. Schools all accross Canada should be doing this as many could benefit from it.

When I was going through school, first aid and CPR where part of the Grade 11 PE cirriculum as well.... only problem was that PE-11 was optional. Since students at the time where focused on the academic side, PE11 was often passed over by the majority in lue of taking another elective to add to their resumes that would be going to the various post-secondary instatutes.

As part of the Business Administration Program that I took post-secondary, I had to run a "ghost company." One of the options was a First Aid Supplier. Naturally I branched out my fake company to include a First Aid Training Division. One of the charitiable endevours my company took on (it was part of the course requirements) was to teach CPR to school children at the ages of 12 and 15.

I got super-ultra-bonus marks for including long term projected "lives saved" data based on the increase in the number of people among the general public who would know CPR as a result of my sponsoring school based CPR classes (I had to create some of my own numbers because the statisitcs I needed were not readily available at the time); and ultimitly how I could use that projected data as a marketing tool to make my company look better than the competition.

If I could come up with all this data five years ago I am surprised the government, school board, or a private company hasn't figured it out by now!

We didnt get it in school, but I was in cadets and got an extra mit-full of credits for school for doing it. Its kinda silly that they dont teach CPR though to everyone~!

CPR/First Aid training was never available when I was in high school. To the best of my knowledge, it still isn't. I think that teaching it in high schools is an excellent idea. Everyone should get a CPR class at some point in their life. Even if they only get it once and forget half of it the next day, some knowledge of how to act in an emergency situation is better than none!
