Is there a union for paramedics? Such as the IAFF for firefighters. Can paramedics work for those patient transfer services in their time off? Kind of the same as Full Time FF being a Volly. Just a question it is not ment to start a fight.

Well, I know that locally (Toronto) they are members of

the Toronto Civic Employees' Union, Local 416 CUPE.

And then there are these guys:

http://www.iaep.org/

Don't let the name fool ya, they don't really look.....international to me.

Calgary Paramedics are reprisented by CUPE #3421 http://www.calgaryparamedics.com/

I know of many medics that work on their days off with other ambulance services or patient transfer companies...I would imagine just like the dreaded double hatting issue for firefighters, it could cause some friction if you were working with two different unions. Not 100% sure about it...I'm not really all that up on the politics of EMS locals. I will say that pretty much all large municipalities will have unionized paramedics and EMT's though.

Paramedics in Ontario are represented by several different unions.CUPE,OPSEU and SIEU to name a few. It is better now since provincial downloading.

You wont find any paramedics represented by the IAFF in Ontario since there are no integrated services.

Regarding working for other services...for some its a necessary evil to work for two or three services PT to get hired FT. There is no rule in place saying you cant..The only service that I know of that does not hire PT is Toronto.

In Saskatoon the Fd has a IAFF local and MD Ambulance also has a IAFF local. Same city, but 2 different locals. IAFF is begining to reach into the EMS side of things as well but if you go to their site you might be able to contact someone and find out how it worked/works for them www.mdambulance.com
