ya we use a green strobe that mounts right on our dash. they flash 3 times. something like 160 flashes per minute total. they are made by "Code 3". where our chief got them I dont know. But im sure there are lots of suppliers out there. Personally I like the rotator lights better. You can get a 5 sided mirror to go behind it. That produces an amazing light show. I think that is way more visible than the strobe. The pros and cons of the strobe? The strobe is small and can be hiden in the glove box like some do and is cheaper. The rotator is bigger and more expensive but looks better. And the lens can be changed to orange or blue if you have a snow plow. Both can be mounted on the dash using automotive two sided tape. Once it sticks its hard to come off.

just saw yesterday that Canadian Tire also supplies "Code 3" strobes. you can find them in their huge automotive catalog which is available at all stores.

I'm a mechanic fulltime, while working at an International truck dealer I looked through the "grote" cataloge and they make several style of lights. Any automotive jobber(parts supplier) should have a cataloge to browse through. If your lucky the local jobber might sell them for a good price if you explain your volunteer, or if more then one is ordered by the clan at the firehall.

You can't purchase the "hide-a-strobe" system in green. Clear or amber. Get a good LED dash or visor mounted light. There are many on the market, checkout Wholesale fire rescue in calgary.
Besides.. if I saw you driving down the road with your parking lights with quad flash green strobes I'd think you were a punk kid trying to "trick" out his car! :D :D

Just a followup I was doing some research on the hide-a-flash strobe systems and it seems you can get different colored strobe bulbs including green, amber, red, and clear.
Search the net and you will find them..

Whelen carries these systems but quite expensive. $400 to $500 for a 4 strobe system. Green
Any Whelen rep in your area can get em.
You can get a cheap "competion" version at Canadian tire, (you see these used on the ricers). I don't belive they are very bright though. $20 a pair. they are actually a neon tube set up to flash. but again they problably don't have the intensity of the actual emergency responce strobe. The Whelen is a full 15 watt strobe.

While researching I found that whelen seemed to be overpriced.
Able2 out of the states seemed to have the best prices even with the conversion...

I bought some green LED lights that tuck nicely into the grill with a multi-"strobe," switchable pattern button inside. You normally can't see them, and it doesn't change the look of the car -- until you press a simple button and turn them on. The LED lights take very little power, but the different "strobe" patterns are attention grabbing. The price wasn't too bad either.
Check it out: http://www.strobe-direct.com/Catalog/Able2Products/trio.htm (//http://www.strobe-direct.com/Catalog/Able2Products/trio.htm)
I had to order from the U.S. -- it is hard to find a Canadian supplier with good stuff. The guy from Strobe Direct guaranteed my satisfaction, or he said he'd buy them back. I bought a halogen strobe for my truck years ago from a Canadian supplier, but the Trio's alternating and random patterns look similar to police, only they are green.
Cheers.

Hi Folks,
This is just a question, With the Volunteer dept's that use dash lites etc. to assist in getting to the hall a little easier, (and I know they would be handy) have you had or heard of any accidents involving volunteers breaking the road rules just to get to the firecall? I used to think that the lites would be a great idea, but a few years ago I was visiting a Town in Eastern Manitoba and the one evening we were just touring the town and I saw a liitle S10 coming up behind me with a blue lite on his dash flashing. He pulled around me and about a block down the road blew through a red lite at about 60MPH. When I saw the trucks leave the Firehall, I followed... (I know...I Know...don't follow the fire trucks, but you've got to see if they do things the same way we do...don't ya). anyway...I followed the fire truck and they went a couple of miles in to the country and ended up putting out a munure pile that was smoldering. Was this call or any call worth blowing through that red lite?I have always though since then that no matter how many guys on our dept would be responsible with the lites, I can always think of a least one that would not obey the rules. What are your thoughts on this? Sorry if this is spot for this post. It was just a spur of the moment thought.

I have a teardrop light. It cost me $75.00 at Acklands. You can buy strobe lights but the teardrop works good!

Yes, Whelen is expensive (but good), there are Canadian dealers in the Able 2 line. Most of these companies will point you to their provincial dealer reps.

There will always be some bending of the rules. This instance would mandate a call to the chief for a heads up.
The intro of the lights has been great, drive safe and you'll be all right. This individual would have driven this way with or with out a light.

and no I do not work for him!

The thing to keep in mind with dash lights is the location of your airbags. You don't want your light to be a projectile in even a minor collision. Our Dept has decided to only purchase visor or window mounted lights and I know there are others out there doing the same.

Code 3 had a solution for that years ago...at least with the deck blaster units our dept uses. It came with a mounting hardware and a tether cord that is to be hooked to the unit to prevent it from flying around in a accident. But that required us to drill holes to mount the unit so I didnt do it. But at least the option is there.
