With at least two months left in the traditional forest fire season and eight months remaining in the fiscal year, the provincial government has already nearly exhausted the $55.5 million it budgeted to battle blazes. Forests Ministry spokeswoman Kerry Readshaw said Tuesday the province has spent $54 million fighting fires. And with 326 wildfires burning across B.C., that figure will only climb. Once the firefighting budget is exhausted, the ministry will likely have to draw on general government contingency funds but the effort will continue as long as it is required.
