Ottawa firefighters have been breathing pollutants in their secure air tanks for years, says a letter recently distributed by the city to its 900 firefighters. A series of tests by the Ottawa Fire Service discovered oil and metallic contaminants were present in the life-saving compressed air tanks used by city firefighters. The letter blames the contamination on the processes used to create the air mixture and recharge the tanks, as well as testing and inspection processes.
