Anyone heard on the tender / outcome for the City? -- I understand they are seeking multiple ladders and pumpers. Has the bid been awarded to anyone yet (seems like ages)...OD.

Initially they were all to be American LaFrance purchased through Areo-Fire (Areo-Feu) but one of the other manufacturers complained about the bidding process so it was re-opened. It looks like now they will be split with Smeal

It was announced on the 15th of November that the contract has been awarded to E-one. Within 24 months 32 vehicles are to be delivered (16 pumps and 16 ladders). The order is for a total of 70 apparatus and may eventually include 4 new buses, 2 new decon vehicles, 1 new ice rescue trailer, 8 protection vehicles (known as 500's in Montreal. basically a F-350 chassis with a box on it) and 2 tankers.

I hope the City of Montreal intends to send all of their motor mechanics out for additional electrical trouble shooting courses, they will certainly need it with that many E-One chassis coming on. Backbraces for the rough rides and hearing protection for the operators will become standard equipment. It is truly a shame that all of this new equipment did not come on Spartan chassis, having dealt extensively with both, the Spartan wins hands down.

We have 3 e-ones at my work a typhoon pumper, freightliner rescue and a 95 ft platform. The rescue is a big heap of crap, has electrical issues and was just built to darn quick, are tendering process didn't help either. The typhoon has had it's share of electrical issues. Lately it seems the air horn goes off for unknown reasons. The mechanics can't find the reason, so it's been disconnected. We have also had some lighting problems as well. The 95ft platform runs great. But it normally never goes out.
We have a 93 Spartan Gladitator rasied roof. Great truck except for it is so rough riding. Haven't had a chance to run a new spartan so hopefully those issues have changed.

Thanks for the info on MFD -- their dealer their is great and support the rigs nicely for the City -- I have no doubts.

My hall has three pieces of frontline aparatus, a pumper, rescue, and a 114' RLP Bronto Aerial. Both the Pumper and the Rescue are on Spartan Chassis (built in 2004 and 2006 respectively). The Bronto is on an E-One Chassis and was built in 2006.
As oldarffer pointed out, the difference between these two is night and day. The Spartan's are quiet, smooth, and very well finished solid pieces of apparatus. The E-One is loud, has already begun its share of electrical problems, and clearly just not as solidly built as the Spartans.
From first hand experience, the issue with Montreal's decision to purchase E-Ones is clear; they had best be prepared for a lot of mechanical headaches, and increased mechanical downtime.

Montreal is very familiar with mechanical problems.... not to point any fingers but their fleet has been mis managed in the past. This is the second contract awarded to E-One since the island mergers and so far I haven't heard any complaints about their new ladders. I guess you get what you pay for and they obviously went with the lowest bidder. As for maintenance, the distributor is only responsible for repairs that fall under the warranty, the rest will be up to the guys at the municipal garage.... I wish them good luck.

On a similar topic about Montreal rigs, I heard rumors that CYUL is supposed to recieve a new crash truck next year (apparantly a 4 axle stryker with boom + pierceing nozzle) anyone heard similar?
