I just watched a dvd about 9-11 and i saw 2 colours of helmets in the FDNY:

All Cheifs were white
Everything else was black officers, firefighters and probies, they just had different colour patches on the front.
And I saw red helmets, the guys with red helmets also had red SCBA's does anyone know who these people are and why they have red helmets?

Firefighterkid. Is the DVD called 9-11 and about a rookie firefighter, and then the attacks? If so, I have it and will watch it again soon , and see if I can pick out what you are mentioning.

Our Dept.

Chiefs- White
Captains - Red
Firefighters - Yellow
Junoirs- Yellow helmet but blue coveralls that say Junoir FF in big RED letters.

Ya thats the one. You cant miss the red helmets and tanks either. At one point when they are in tower one and tower 2 just collapsed they are using the camera's light to see people and one of the red tanks hits the camera. So you can't miss them.

Well here is our color code

Chief/Deputy Chief White and Blue Bunker Gear
Hall Captains and Captains Red----difference between Hall Captain and Captain is the Hall Captain is in charge of the hall Bunker gear Tan
Saftey Officer is Black Bunker gear is Tan
Worker Bee is Yellow with Tan Gear

We were finding that on scene and after a few snow flurries the Chief looked like everyone else so thats why they have blue gear...... man does it show up........

Firefighterkid, the different colour shields on the FDNY helmets represent what kind of apparatus they are assigned to. I think blue is rescue, black is engine and red is ladder(correct me if I'm wrong). The red helmets may be volunteer. New York city actually has some volunteer companies in the city. I think one of the volunteer companies lost their truck at the World Trade Centre.
