Volunteer firefighters not covered for hepatitis vaccines

[ Back ]

Posted by web-chief on Feb 28, 2012 @ 8:13AM

Snippet:

CORNER BROOK, NL - If volunteer firefighters in the province want to be vaccinated against hepatitis, they’ll either have to pay for it themselves or start lobbying for the municipalities they serve to do so.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services has received confirmation from the Department of Health and Community Services that it will not cover the costs to have the province’s health authorities offer the vaccinations at no cost to volunteer firefighters.

The association got involved with the issue after it was raised by the Hughes Brook-Irishtown-Summerside (HIS) Fire Rescue. The concern was that firefighters put themselves at risk of contracting hepatitis, in particular hepatitis B, when responding to vehicle accidents and other medical emergencies.
