Manitoba RCMP stuck with the cost of rescuing U.S. anglers

LAKE OF THE WOODS, MB - Manitoba RCMP will be on the hook for much of the costs of rescuing 13 American anglers from an ice floe adrift in Lake of the Woods earlier this week.

Sgt. Line Karpish said the costs - including a bill still to be submitted by Lake of the Woods Search and Rescue -- will come out of the police division's budget.

Karpish said the RCMP do not have a cost-recovery policy for searches and rescues, adding the police force does not want the public to hesitate to call police when they are in trouble.
