Thorold firefighters sound alarm over fires

[ Back ]

Posted by web-chief on Apr 5, 2012 @ 8:08AM

THOROLD, ON - Thorold Fire and Emergency Services is sounding the alarm over a rash of fires in the city over the last few weeks.

A fire that burned a train bridge at the south end of Ormond Street last Friday night, followed a few hours later by railway ties a couple of hundred metres away that were set ablaze, are the latest fires that have Fire Chief Chris Halliday and fire prevention officer Capt. Larry Robertson calling for people to be more careful before someone gets badly hurt or killed.

The series of fires started on March 12, when a complex of six partly completed townhouses on Winterberry Drive was destroyed by an inferno in the wee hours of the morning. Halliday said natural gas had not yet been hooked up to the homes and there was no electricity, meaning someone must have deliberately set the fire that caused an estimated $500,000 in damage.
