Oshawa fire crews issue fire safety reminder

OSHAWA, ON - Oshawa firefighters are issuing an strong reminder to residents about the importance of smoke alarms after a sharp increase in the number of fires during the past month.

In the past 30 days, Oshawa firefighters were called to 16 fires compared to four in the same period last year, said Oshawa chief fire prevention officer Susan King.

Three people were injured, including one person suffering from burns, and a mother and child were injured after jumping from a window to escape a fire. Thirteen of the 16 fires occurred at residences. Estimated damaged totalled $1.5 million.
